Hydrogen Peroxide from Traditional Sanitizer to Promising Disinfection Agent in Food Industry

Asem Mahmoud Abdelshafy et al.

Summary: This review discusses strategies for improving the disinfecting action of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the food industry, including combining H2O2 with other chemical disinfectants or disinfection techniques. The study found that combining H2O2 with other disinfectants enhances its antimicrobial activity and provides a promising disinfection strategy in the food industry.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the sources of Salmonella in poultry production (pre-harvest) and their relative contributions to the microbial risk of poultry meat

J. Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the potential sources of Salmonella during the preharvest stage in poultry production. The hatchery was identified as the most significant contributor, followed by litter, feces, and the internal environment of the poultry house.

Effect of high voltage atmospheric cold plasma on chicken eggs quality during refrigerated storage

Alba E. Illera et al.

Summary: Salmonella Enteritidis outbreaks are often caused by the consumption of eggs and egg products. High Voltage Atmospheric Cold Plasma (HVACP) has been proven to effectively reduce the bacterial load on the surface of eggs. A six-week study was conducted to assess the quality of HVACP-treated eggs during their shelf life, and the results showed that the treatment did not significantly affect the quality of the eggs. This demonstrates that HVACP technology is a viable alternative for ensuring both the safety and quality of eggs.

Prevalence, main serovars and anti-microbial resistance profiles of non-typhoidal Salmonella in poultry samples from the Americas: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Daniel Diaz et al.

Summary: The prevalence of NTS in poultry samples is high and varies significantly among different countries, with the highest values in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. There is a concerning prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among zoonotic serovars, with distinct patterns of serovar distribution across countries.

Observations on the distribution and control of Salmonella in commercial broiler hatcheries in Great Britain

Claire E. Oastler et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of Salmonella in commercial hatcheries in Great Britain and assessed the effectiveness of providing advice on Salmonella control. The study found low-level contamination of Salmonella in some hatcheries, with certain areas being more contaminated than others. It was also shown that significant reductions in prevalence can be achieved through improvements in biosecurity, cleaning, and disinfection.

High voltage atmospheric cold plasma decontamination of Salmonella enteritidis on chicken eggs

Alba E. Illera et al.

Summary: This study optimized the HVACP treatment method for reducing Salmonella enteritidis (SE) on the surface of chicken eggs. The results showed that HVACP treatment can effectively reduce SE contamination without affecting key quality parameters of the eggs. This provides a basis for future scale-up of the process in the food industry.

Salmonella Enteritidis Outbreaks Associated with Egg-Producing Farms Not Regulated by Food and Drug Administration's Egg Safety Rule

Charles Robert Stilz et al.

Summary: The Food and Drug Administration's Egg Safety Rule requires producers with more than 3000 layer hens to have a Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis (SE) prevention plan. However, in Tennessee, four outbreaks of salmonellosis associated with eggs have occurred, with three farms not meeting the criteria for regulation and one farm operating in violation of the rule.

Evaluation of hydrogen peroxide and ozone residue levels on N95 masks following chemical decontamination

P. Kumkrong et al.

Summary: This study found that hydrogen peroxide and ozone residues persisted on N95 masks after chemical decontamination, even after 5 hours of aeration. Hydrogen peroxide was detected on all masks studied, with levels up to 56 mg per mask observed after 0.5 hours of aeration. Residual levels gradually decreased with aeration, likely due to decomposition and vaporization.

Decontamination of N95 and surgical masks using a treatment based on a continuous gas phase-Advanced Oxidation Process

Mahdiyeh Hasani et al.

Summary: The gas-phase Advanced Oxidation Process (gAOP) was evaluated for decontaminating N95 and surgical masks by generating hydroxyl-radicals through UV-C photo-degradation of hydrogen peroxide and ozone. The treatment effectively reduced bacteria and viruses on the masks without affecting their fit and filtration efficiency, making it a suitable decontamination method for masks. Additionally, the optimized gAOP treatment was found effective for surgical masks as well.
