Extreme events in transitional turbulence

Sebastien Gome et al.

Summary: This paper studies the transition processes of decay or proliferation in shear flows by applying a rare-event algorithm, and reveals the connection between transition states and the Reynolds number. The approach indicates that decay or proliferation events are guided by the most probable pathway, as approached by instantons from Large Deviation theory.

Conditions for aeolian transport in the Solar System

Andrew Gunn et al.

Summary: This paper presents a theory for the fluid and impact thresholds of aeolian transport in different celestial bodies in the Solar System, which is validated by experimental threshold observations. The results indicate that the thresholds strongly depend on local environmental conditions, except on Earth, and provide new insights into the dune motion on Titan and Mars. This work highlights the importance of dunes in understanding atmospheric dynamics and surface sediment and calls for further investigation into neglected processes.

A distinct ripple-formation regime on Mars revealed by the morphometrics of barchan dunes

Lior Rubanenko et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence that large martian ripples form from the same hydrodynamic instability as windblown dunes and subaqueous ripples. Artificial neural network analysis of isolated barchan dunes on Mars reveals that the size of the smallest dunes decreases with increasing atmospheric density.

Roughness Effects of Subaquaeous Ripples and Dunes

Ulrich Zanke et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes and compares 14 solution approaches to morphodynamic processes caused by sediment movements driven by fluid flows. The study found that the predictive accuracy of all approaches was significantly higher for ripples than dunes. Among all approaches, the Engelund 1977 method showed the highest accuracy.

Predicting the Drag of Rough Surfaces

Daniel Chung et al.

Summary: Reliable full-scale prediction of drag due to rough wall-bounded turbulent fluid flow remains a challenge, with at least 10% uncertainty. Recent advances have lowered barriers and are beginning to impact other multiphysical areas, promising increased predictive reliability.

A lower-than-expected saltation threshold at Martian pressure and below

Bruno Andreotti et al.

Summary: The experiments reveal that Martian conditions belong to a previously unexplored saltation regime, with the threshold wind speed for saltation decreasing unexpectedly with higher density ratios. Impact ripples, on the other hand, show characteristic wavelength and propagation velocity independent of pressure. This suggests that sediment transport at low Reynolds number but high grain-to-fluid density ratio may be dominated by collective effects associated with grain inertia in the granular collisional layer.
