A scale-based study of the Reynolds number scaling for the near-wall streamwise turbulence intensity in wall turbulence

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: Recently, a defect model has been developed to explain the growth tendency of the near-wall peak of streamwise turbulence intensity. The model predicts that the magnitude of the peak will approach a finite limit as the Reynolds number increases. In this study, the basic hypotheses of the model are revisited and some inconsistencies with wall-bounded turbulence are found. Furthermore, a framework based on spectral stochastic estimation is developed to assess the wall dissipation contributed by energy-containing eddies in the logarithmic region.

Linear response analysis of supersonic turbulent channel flows with a large parameter space

Xianliang Chen et al.

Summary: The linear responses of turbulent mean flow to harmonic and stochastic forcing in supersonic channel flow are investigated in this study. Well-established universal relations are used to efficiently obtain mean profiles in a large parameter space, allowing for a systematic parameter study. The most amplified structure is streamwise velocity and temperature streaks forced by streamwise vortices. The pre-multiplied energy amplification peak corresponds to large-scale motion, which is insensitive to compressibility effects. The classic inner peak representing small-scale near-wall motions disappears with increasing Mach number for stochastic response.

Linear-model-based study of the coupling between velocity and temperature fields in compressible turbulent channel flows

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: This study uses the two-dimensional spectral linear stochastic estimation (SLSE) model to investigate the coupling between temperature and velocity fields in compressible wall-bounded turbulence from the perspective of multi-scale energy-containing eddies. The statistical characteristics of the temperature field are given particular attention. It is found that the coupling of these two fields varies with the wall-normal position in the boundary layer.

Predicting mean profiles in compressible turbulent channel and pipe flows

Yubin Song et al.

Summary: A modified iterative method is proposed for predicting mean profiles in compressible channel and pipe turbulence. The method solves a nonlinear system consisting of the perfect gas assumption, Sutherland's viscosity law, variable-property scaling models for compressible wall turbulence, incompressible velocity law of the wall, and the relationship between mean temperature and velocity. Parametric studies show that the proposed method is robust and does not rely on initial parameter guesses. Results indicate that the method performs well for channel and pipe flows at different Reynolds and Mach numbers, with relative errors in mean temperature and velocity profiles within 2% and 5%, respectively, compared to available direct numerical simulation databases.

Near-wall model for compressible turbulent boundary layers based on an inverse velocity transformation

Kevin P. Griffin et al.

Summary: In this work, a near-wall model is developed for high-speed turbulent boundary layers by coupling a recently developed compressible velocity transformation and an algebraic temperature-velocity relation. The model can predict mean temperature and velocity profiles, as well as wall shear stress and heat flux, using the mean flow state at specific heights. The model is significantly more accurate than the classical ordinary differential equation (ODE) model and has similar computational cost and implementation complexity.

Effects of mean shear on the vortex identification and the orientation statistics

Tianyi Bai et al.

Summary: This study compares the threshold for vortex identification based on swirling strength and vortex orientation statistics in compressible and incompressible turbulent channel flows. The results show that there is minimal difference in swirling strength for vortex identification in the logarithmic region, indicating the same threshold can be used. The inclination angle of vortex orientation remains similar, but as the wall-normal distance increases, there is a clear distinction in orientation with respect to the spanwise direction. These findings provide a reasonable explanation for previous research observations.

Compressible Velocity Transformations for Various Noncanonical Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows

Tianyi Bai et al.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of several popular velocity profile transformations in noncanonical compressible wall-bounded turbulent flows. It was found that these transformations fail to deliver uniform performance in the logarithmic region and a more sophisticated version is needed. However, data-driven and total-stress-based transformations perform well in the viscous sublayer for all considered flows.

Summary: This paper investigates two fundamental models describing multiscale turbulence interactions and energy-containing motions. The comparison between the statistics from these two models demonstrates their consistency and complementarity. A Gaussian model is proposed to characterize the distribution of streamwise wall-shear stress resulting from attached-eddy superpositions.

Summary: This study analyzes the disturbance energy budget in hypersonic and high-enthalpy boundary layers with thermal-chemical nonequilibrium effects. The contribution from different terms is evaluated for the disturbance growth rate. The results show that the growth rates are mainly influenced by the production and viscous terms, with TCNE flow exhibiting differences in the second mode growth rate compared to the calorically perfect gas flow.

The colour of forcing statistics in resolvent analyses of turbulent channel flows

Pierluigi Morra et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear forcing term in turbulent channel flows was quantified and analyzed, revealing a structured nature with a solenoidal part affecting the velocity field. An approximation using the most energetic SPOD modes captured the bulk of the response, while the projection of the nonlinear forcing onto the linear sub-optimal forcings demonstrated the limitations of linear optimal forcing representation. Additionally, the Cess eddy-viscosity-modeled forcing was shown to improve the accuracy of resolvent analysis predictions by projecting onto the linear sub-optimal forcings similarly to DNS data.

Energy transfer in turbulent channel flows and implications for resolvent modelling

Sean Symon et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the energy transfer between scales in two types of plane Poiseuille flow, with streamwise-constant streaks identified as the dominant energy-producing modes. Eddy viscosity is found to be an effective model for the nonlinear terms in the resolvent analysis. However, it fails to respect the conservative nature of the nonlinear energy transfer, leading to less effective modeling for scales that receive energy from the nonlinear terms.
