A vorticity-based criterion to characterise leading edge dynamic stall onset

Sarasija Sudharsan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a criterion called boundary enstrophy flux (BEF) to characterize leading-edge-type dynamic stall onset in incompressible flows. Based on large-eddy simulations, it is found that BEF reaches a maximum within the stall onset regime. The dominant contribution to BEF comes from the laminar leading edge region, while a smaller contribution comes from the transitional/turbulent laminar separation bubble (LSB) region. Additionally, a comparison with the leading edge suction parameter (LESP) shows that BEF reaches its maximum value earlier in the rotation.

Experimental quantification of unsteady leading-edge flow separation

Julien Deparday et al.

Summary: This study proposes an experimental method to quantify unsteady leading-edge flow separation on aerofoils with finite thickness, and validates the computation of the leading-edge suction parameter for both numerical and experimental data. The leading-edge suction parameter serves as a directly quantitative measure of the degree of unsteady flow separation at the leading edge.

The dynamics and timescales of static stall

Sebastien Le Fouest et al.

Summary: The study investigated the forces acting on a two-dimensional airfoil undergoing static stall, comparing it with dynamic stall reactions. It was found that both types of stall reaction delays follow the same power law decrease, with static stall occurring for low pitch rates where flow separation is not promoted by blade kinematics. Static stall delays were found to decrease from a steady rate to an asymptotic value for reduced pitch rates above 0.04.
