A review of spatial capture-recapture: Ecological insights, limitations, and prospects

Mahdieh Tourani

Summary: Spatial capture-recapture (SCR) methods, first described by Efford in 2004, have become a popular tool in ecology for estimating ecological parameters while accounting for imperfect detection. SCR methods utilize spatial information from individual detections to allow for spatially explicit estimation of population parameters. The application of SCR to a wide range of species across different habitats has resulted in population- and landscape-level inferences with direct conservation and management implications.

Atlantic salmon survival at sea: temporal changes that lack regional synchrony

Maria Tirronen et al.

Summary: The study investigated parallel trends in the sea survival of Atlantic salmon populations using data on migrating smolts and returning adults from seven Canadian populations. The results showed that while there were broadly comparable patterns in survival, finer-scale temporal shifts were not synchronous among populations. This suggests that salmon populations do not consistently share the same mortality-related stressors in the marine environment.

Time series covering up to four decades reveals major changes and drivers of marine growth and proportion of repeat spawners in an Atlantic salmon population

Alison Harvey et al.

Summary: The decline in wild Atlantic salmon populations is attributed to various factors, including natural and anthropogenic influences. This study analyzed age and growth data, spawning run sampling, and environmental factors to understand the mechanisms behind population changes. The results show a decline in marine growth, a shift in population composition, and an increase in repeat spawners, especially in females. The study also found associations between marine growth and sea surface temperature, zooplankton biomass, and salmon lice infestation intensity.

Evaluating Alternative Hierarchical Modeling Approaches for the Estimation of Salmonid Smolt Abundance

Quinn Payton et al.

Summary: Calibrated estimates of fisheries population abundance are vital in the development and appraisal of management actions. Capture-recapture experiments are valuable monitoring tools for estimating abundance of biological populations. Results showed that an autoregressive model of abundance coupled with a random effects binomial model of recapture was the least biased model.

Bayesian statistics and modelling

Rens van de Schoot et al.

Summary: Bayesian statistics is a data analysis approach based on Bayes' theorem, which involves determining parameters through prior distributions, likelihood functions, and posterior distributions. This method has shown successful applications in various disciplines and has improved accuracy in predicting future events.
