The physiology of alternative splicing

Luciano E. Marasco et al.

Summary: Alternative splicing is a significant contributor to the complexity of multicellular eukaryotic transcriptomes, shaping the physiology and pathology of organisms at the protein level. It regulates diverse processes such as cell differentiation, thermal regulation, neuron self-avoidance, infrared sensing, Warburg effect, telomere length maintenance, cancer, and autism spectrum disorders. Additionally, understanding the control of alternative splicing has paved the way for clinical therapies of hereditary diseases.

Insights into established and emerging roles of SR protein family in plants and animals

Kundan Kumar et al.

Summary: Pre-mRNA splicing is crucial in eukaryotic gene expression, in which SR proteins play a pivotal role. They are involved in splicing, mRNA export, stability, and translation, as well as mRNA decay. Misregulation of SR proteins leads to developmental defects in plants and animals. Plant genomes have more SR protein-encoding genes and greater diversity compared to animals, possibly for plant-specific functions. Studies confirm the essential role of SR proteins as regulators of gene expression in cellular processes, developmental stages, and disease conditions.

The SCL30a SR protein regulates ABA-dependent seed traits and germination under stress

Tom Laloum et al.

Summary: The plant-specific SCL30a SR protein negatively regulates ABA signaling to control seed traits and stress responses during germination in Arabidopsis. Loss of SCL30a function induces ABA-responsive gene expression and genes repressed during germination, resulting in delayed germination and hypersensitivity to ABA and high salinity in scl30a mutant seeds. Transgenic plants overexpressing SCL30a exhibit reduced ABA and salt stress sensitivity.

Anything but Ordinary - Emerging Splicing Mechanisms in Eukaryotic Gene Regulation

Niels H. Gehring et al.

Summary: Splicing of precursor mRNAs is essential for eukaryotic gene expression, with accurate identification of splice sites and intron removal being crucial for producing desired mRNA isoforms. Recent research has uncovered noncanonical splicing mechanisms that play key roles in gene expression regulation, in addition to well-understood basic splicing regulation mechanisms.

Stress-Induced Changes in Alternative Splicing Landscape in Rice: Functional Significance of Splice Isoforms in Stress Tolerance

Showkat Ahmad Ganie et al.

Summary: When facing environmental stresses, alternative splicing (AS) plays a crucial role in rice by rapidly regulating gene expression to help the plant adapt to various pressures. Studies have shown that AS is important for rice growth and development, especially under stress conditions. Understanding the impact of AS on rice and its pathogens can provide valuable insights for developing stress-resistant rice varieties in the future.

Pre-mRNA alternative splicing as a modulator for heat stress response in plants

Yu Ling et al.

Summary: The article reviews AS regulation in response to heat stress in different plant species and proposes that AS regulation participates in heat priming establishment and heat memory maintenance in plants. It suggests that pre-mRNA splicing variation is an important regulator of plant heat stress responses.
