Deficient Autophagy in Microglia Aggravates Repeated Social Defeat Stress-Induced Social Avoidance

Mai Sakai et al.

Summary: This study explores the changes in autophagy signaling in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) under repeated social defeat (RSD) and their potential involvement in behavioral changes induced by stress. The results suggest that enhanced autophagy may alleviate stress-induced depression, and microglial autophagy plays a role in stress-induced behavioral changes.

Xiao-Le Wang et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that Danzhi-Xiaoyao-San (DXS) had a similar effect to antidepressants in terms of clinical comprehensive effect and decrease in Self-Rating Depression Scale scores, but had a lower effect in Hamilton Depression Scale scores. Furthermore, the combination of DXS and antidepressants showed significant improvement in clinical comprehensive effect and decrease in Hamilton Depression Scale scores compared to pure antidepressants.

Ketamine Regulates the Autophagy Flux and Polarization of Microglia through the HMGB1-RAGE Axis and Exerts Antidepressant Effects in Mice

Meng Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of the HMGB1-RAGE pathway in LPS-induced depression-like behavior and microglial autophagy flux, neuroinflammation, and polarization was explored. Ketamine was found to improve depression-like behavior, inhibit the upregulation of HMGB1 and RAGE, and regulate microglial autophagy flux through the HMGB1-RAGE pathway and microglial polarization. These findings suggest that ketamine may be a new therapeutic target for preventing and treating depression.

Neuroinflammation and depression: A review

Romain Troubat et al.

Summary: Neuroinflammation interacts with key neurobiological factors of depression, potentially presenting a crucial therapeutic target for future treatments. This interaction may impact serotonin levels, HPA axis regulation, and hippocampal neurogenesis, leading to the pathophysiological cascade of increased glutamate levels and altered neurotransmission. It can be triggered by chronic inflammatory conditions or primary brain neuroinflammation, highlighting the importance of addressing neuroinflammation in the treatment of major depressive disorder.
