Invisible? Assessing the Fate of Sunscreen-Derived Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in Swimming Pool Water Using Single Particle and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Simone Heilgeist et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of nano-TiO2 in swimming pool water and the effectiveness of a common pool filter in removing nano-TiO2. The results show that the addition of sunscreen significantly increases the concentration of nano-TiO2 in the water, but most of it is removed after 3 days of filtration. The filter is able to remove Ti-containing particles, and Ti accumulates near the filter core.

Environmental Fate and Toxicity of Sunscreen-Derived Inorganic Ultraviolet Filters in Aquatic Environments: A Review

Shengwu Yuan et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews the sources, behaviors, and impacts of inorganic ultraviolet filters (UVFs) in aquatic environments. The study finds that the characteristics of nanoparticles and coating materials significantly influence the environmental behavior and fate of inorganic UVFs. The ecotoxicological risks and underlying mechanisms at individual and trophic transfer levels are discussed. Due to their persistence and bioaccumulation, more attention and research should be directed towards investigating the sources, fate, and trophic transfer of inorganic UVFs in ecosystems.

Mapping the Complex Journey of Swimming Pool Contaminants: A Multi-Method Systems Approach

Simone Heilgeist et al.

Summary: This paper develops a multi-method approach for identifying and understanding the interdependencies between titanium dioxide particles and an aquatic environment such as a swimming pool. By utilizing a systems approach and systems thinking techniques, the authors visually depict the complex system and provide users with a basic understanding of swimming pool chemistry. This systems-level understanding helps to manage nano-TiO2 levels in an efficient manner.

Size-Specific, Dynamic, Probabilistic Material Flow Analysis of Titanium Dioxide Releases into the Environment

Yuanfang Zheng et al.

Summary: Most existing exposure models for engineered nanomaterials do not consider particle size, crystalline forms, and coating materials. A new size-specific, dynamic, probabilistic MFA model was developed to incorporate particle size distributions into material flow analysis. The model found that a significant amount of nanosized TiO2 particles had been released into the environment from conventional TiO2 pigments before TiO2 ENMs came onto the market.

Behavior of engineered nanoparticles in aquatic environmental samples: Current status and challenges

Jejal Reddy Bathi et al.

Summary: The widespread use of engineered nanoparticles in consumer products has resulted in their increased presence in natural water systems. The transformation rates and physicochemical properties of ENPs are primarily influenced by interactions with natural organic matter, as well as parameters related to water chemistry and hydrodynamics. Future nanomanufacturing processes should consider health, safety, and environmental impacts while maintaining the functionality of consumer products.

Finding Nano: Challenges Involved in Monitoring the Presence and Fate of Engineered Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in Aquatic Environments

Simone Heilgeist et al.

Summary: In recent years, titanium dioxide has been increasingly used as an inorganic UV filter for sun protection, but nano-TiO2 poses risks to human health and the environment. Analytical and modelling methods have improved researchers' ability to understand nano-TiO2 behavior, but challenges persist due to environmental and nanoparticle complexity. Current fate and transport models lack spatial and temporal resolution and surface transformation processes, highlighting the need for new approaches to detect and characterize engineered TiO2 nanoparticles.

Assessment of Nanopollution from Commercial Products in Water Environments

Raisibe Florence Lehutso et al.

Summary: The study investigated the release of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) from commercial products, revealing that the released ENMs were associated with ions and coating agents, with varying sizes and shapes. The total concentrations of released ENMs were influenced by the nature of the product and water quality.
