Summary: This study investigated the growth of Chlorella miniata under different temperature and light intensity conditions. Mathematical models were tested using experimental data, and the Aiba model for light intensity and Skewed Normal Distribution model for temperature performed the best. A new model was developed to consider the combined effects of light intensity and temperature on algal growth. The calculated optimum conditions for maximum specific growth rate were 22.43°C and 291.5 μmol photon m(-2) s(-1) for temperature and light intensity, respectively.

Deeper insights into the effects of substrate to inoculum ratio selection on the relationship of kinetic parameters, microbial communities, and key metabolic pathways during the anaerobic digestion of food waste

Yanzeng Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explored the effects of different substrate to inoculum ratios (S/I) on the kinetic parameters, microbial communities, and metabolic pathways during the anaerobic digestion process of food waste. The results showed that low S/I ratios were favorable for methanogenesis, while high S/I ratios led to irreversible acidification. S/I = 1:3 had the highest methane yield, more apparent microbial cooperation, and the highest abundance of key enzymes involved in the methanogenesis pathway.

Summary: This study compared the feasibility of a bubble column photobioreactor (PBR) and a high rate pond (HRP) in the treatment of wastewater from a meat processing facility. The results showed similar treatment efficiency in the two reactors, with PBR showing greater advantage in ammoniacal nitrogen assimilation and biomass production. Environmental impact assessment and energy balance comparison revealed that HRP had lower environmental burdens and better energy balance than PBR. However, both reactors have advantages when applied to different valorization routes.

Practical strategies to improve harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal culture: A review

Nima Hajinajaf et al.

Summary: Research on renewable energy is a key challenge in this century due to increasing energy demand and environmental issues associated with fossil fuel consumption. Microalgae have received renewed attention as a potential feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of large-scale cultivation systems currently limits economic viability. This study aims to review factors influencing harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal cultures, particularly those fed with wastewater, and discuss practical strategies to promote low-cost energy production. It is concluded that among the five practical strategies considered, CO2 addition and algal recycling have the greatest impact on enhancing harvestable biomass energy yield.
