Study of Radium Behavior in Contact With Calcium-Silicate-Hydrates

Jana Kittnerova et al.

Summary: Radium-226 is an important radionuclide for the long-term safety of repositories for radioactive waste. Its sorption on calcium-silicate-hydrates (CSH) was studied, and it was found to be fast and described by linear isotherms with high distribution ratios. The sorption process is exothermic and spontaneous, likely governed by chemical reaction. The presence of EDTA had only a small effect on radium sorption. Comparison with alkaline earth elements confirmed higher sorption of radium on CSH compared to barium and strontium.

Formulation and optimization of a phosphogypsum-fly ash-lime composite for road construction: A statistical mixture design approach

Sarra Meskini et al.

Summary: The study investigated the valorization of phosphogypsum and fly ash as road construction materials through lime stabilization. Statistical analysis showed that phosphogypsum addition decreased measured responses, while fly ash and lime caused them to increase. Fly ash addition notably increased compressive strengths at early ages, while at longer curing periods, the interaction with lime and the use of phosphogypsum as a catalyst improved fly ash reactivity.

Summary: This study assessed the natural background radionuclides emanating from subsurface geological features at a secondary school in Canaan land, Ota, Ogun State using gamma-ray spectrometry. The results showed that the stations closest to the school's laboratory had higher gamma radiations and some stations had higher values of radiological parameters.

Lime activated flyash-phosphogypsum blend as a low-cost alternative binder

J. James et al.

Summary: The study identified that a mixture of 5% lime with fly ash and phosphogypsum in a 3:1 ratio produced the maximum strength in cubes. The optimal lime-fly ash-phosphogypsum mortar showed higher strength compared to traditional Portland cement and lime mortar, while the masonry prisms of this blend showed comparable strength to Portland cement mortar. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the formation of calcium silicate hydrate minerals, ettringite, and portlandite, which contributed to the strength gain.

Changes in trace metal concentrations throughout the phosphogypsum lifecycle

Kate D. Weiksnar et al.

Summary: A study found that fresh phosphogypsum (PG) has higher total metal concentrations compared to PG disposed of in stacks. The pH values of stack samples were not linearly related to sample age, but stack samples with pH values similar to fresh samples had lower concentrations of total inorganic metals, suggesting the role of process water drainage and stack location in the reusability of PG.

Development of cementless ultra-high performance fly ash composite (UHPFC) using nucleated pozzolanic reaction of low Ca fly ash

Sung-Hoon Kang et al.

Summary: This study developed an ultra-high performance fly ash composite (UHPFC) by enhancing the pozzolanic reactivity of low-calcium fly ash (FA). The composite showed outstanding performance in workability, mechanical properties, and strength development. Steam curing and the presence of silica fume had a significant effect on improving the reactivity of the fly ash.

Summary: The study showed that adding steel slag and lime to soil significantly increased the pH, organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity. Compared to the original soil, the additions of slag and lime were able to persistently immobilize metal ions, while fly ash additions had little effect.

Valorization of phosphogypsum as a road material: Stabilizing effect of fly ash and lime additives on strength and durability

Sarra Meskini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stabilization of Moroccan phosphogypsum through neutralizing acidity and using mixtures of fly ash and lime for activation. Results show an increase in strength and durability with higher lime content and longer curing time. The mineralogy analysis highlights the formation of ettringite as the main hydration product responsible for strength development.
