Current overview and future perspective in fungal biorecovery of metals from secondary sources

Viktoriia Liapun et al.

Summary: Microorganisms play a crucial role in biogeochemical processes involving the transformation and cycling of metals, metalloids, and radionuclides. These processes influence the mobility and bioavailability of metals, affecting their transfer to the environment and organisms. Microbial metal transformations have important applications in bioremediation of solid and liquid wastes, including solubilization of heavy metals from industrial waste and immobilization of metals and radionuclides from aqueous solutions. This review provides an overview of metal extraction and recovery from secondary sources, microorganisms and methods used, metal-microbe interactions, and known metal recovery mechanisms.

An Fe(II)-oxidizing consortium from Wudalianchi volcano spring in Northeast China for bioleaching of Cu and Ni from printed circuit boards (PCBs) with the dominance of Acidithiobacillus spp.

Shuang Zhang et al.

Summary: A microbial consortium BYQ enriched from a spring in the Wudalianchi volcanic area showed high-efficiency Fe(II) oxidation and leaching of PCBs. Acidithiobacillus spp. dominated the community regardless of subculturing and bioleaching conditions, and jarosite formation was observed during bioleaching.

Production of Hydroxyl Radicals from Oxygenation of Simulated Acid Mine Drainage in Presence of Extracellular Polymers Substances

Xuewen Zhong et al.

Summary: The influence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by microorganisms on Fe(II) oxidation in acid mine drainage (AMD) and the production of ·OH have been investigated. The results showed that an appropriate pH and EPS concentration were required for the moderate rate of Fe(II) oxidation, and the addition of Fe3+ significantly increased the yield of ·OH. The complexation of Fe(II) with EPS, which is rich in carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, was attributed as the main factor for ·OH production.

Bioleaching for detoxification of waste flotation tailings: Relationship between EPS substances and bioleaching behavior

Maoyou Ye et al.

Summary: The production of large volumes of waste flotation tailings leads to environmental pollution and poses a major ecological and environmental risk. This study investigated the bioleaching of these tailings using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, achieving high extraction efficiencies of Zn and Fe. Bioleaching significantly reduced the environmental risk associated with mine tailings by decreasing leachable Zn and Pb, with EPA analysis showing low risk levels for Pb and no risk for Zn, Cu, and Cr. Analysis of EPS showed different organic substances in the LB-EPS and TB-EPS fractions, which played distinct roles in promoting bioleaching.
