Boosting freshwater fish conservation with high-resolution distribution mapping across a large territory

Juan Tao et al.

Summary: The lack of high-resolution distribution maps for freshwater species poses a fundamental challenge to biodiversity conservation worldwide. This study developed a framework to delineate the distributions of freshwater fishes in a high-resolution drainage map, revealing potential conflicts between freshwater biodiversity and human disturbances. The study emphasizes the need for expanding the network of protected areas to ensure the conservation of China's freshwater fishes and their associated ecosystems.

Fluorescence characteristics of DOM and its influence on water quality of rivers and lakes in the Dianchi Lake basin

Jia He et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the material cycle of water environments and affects the water quality of rivers and lakes. The DOM components in Dianchi Lake basin are dominated by humic-like substances and are influenced by seasonal changes. There is a high correlation between the DOM components and water quality indicators, particularly COD and TN. Therefore, DOM can be used to assess the ecosystem status and pollution levels of lakes.

Initial recovery of fish faunas following the implementation of pen-culture and fishing bans in floodplain lakes along the Yangtze River

Chang Xie et al.

Summary: The study found that fish communities in the floodplain lakes along the Yangtze River have recovered well under the ban on pen-culture and fishing, with significant restoration of wild and migratory species. Although there were significant variations in community composition, there were no significant changes in alpha and beta diversity indices. However, there were significant changes in alpha and beta diversity indices between high-water and low-water seasons in the recovery stage, indicating the recovery of natural seasonal community dynamics. The results highlight the importance of conserving lacustrine connectivity and seasonal flooding for the recovery of fishery resources in the floodplain lakes.

Changes in fish assemblages following the implementation of a complete fishing closure in the Chishui River

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: The Chishui River implemented a complete fishing closure, during which the diversity index of fish assemblages showed no significant changes, but the structure of fish assemblages changed significantly over time. The upstream fish assemblages reverted to pre-closure levels, while the midstream and downstream fish assemblages also showed a trend of recovery.

Human impacts on global freshwater fish biodiversity

Guohuan Su et al.

Summary: A new study reveals significant changes in biodiversity in over half of the world's rivers, with human activities increasingly impacting freshwater fish. Current rivers show more similarity and a greater diversity of fish species, but face challenges such as the introduction of non-native species and river fragmentation.

Recovery of tropical marine benthos after a trawl ban demonstrates linkage between abiotic and biotic changes

Zhi Wang et al.

Summary: This article discusses the detrimental effects of bottom trawling on seabed habitats and the positive impact of implementing a trawl ban in Hong Kong. The results show that the ban has improved sediment and water column quality, and led to an increase in abundance, diversity, and similarity of macrobenthos.

Rapid response of fish and aquatic habitat to removal of a tidal barrier

Jingrui Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of tidal barrier removal on fish, macroinvertebrates, and habitats in an English coastal stream. The results show that removal of the barrier led to increased habitat diversity and fish density upstream, with transient changes in macroinvertebrate communities. The study also found that European eel density significantly increased after barrier removal.
