Rapid urbanization affects microplastic communities in lake sediments: A case study of Lake Aha in southwest China

Shilin Gao et al.

Summary: Effective management of microplastic pollution in urban areas is crucial for achieving sustainable cities. This study analyzed the abundance and composition of microplastic communities in Lake Aha's sediments, revealing that the abundance of microplastics decreased with increasing depth and was highest in the surface layer. The composition of microplastic communities varied between high and low urbanization levels, with agricultural input dominating during low urbanization levels and urban activities dominating during high urbanization levels.

Analysis of Microplastics in Human Feces Reveals a Correlation between Fecal Microplastics and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Status

Zehua Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of fecal microplastics in patients with inflammatory bowel disease was significantly higher than in healthy individuals, with poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyamide being the main components in the feces. A positive correlation between fecal microplastics concentration and the severity of IBD was also observed. Plastic packaging of drinking water and food, as well as dust exposure, were identified as important sources of human exposure to microplastics.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Removal of microcystin (MC-LR) in constructed wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cells: Efficiency, bioelectricity generation and microbial response

Rui Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the integration of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) into constructed wetlands for better removal of eutrophication and microcystins (MCs). The closed-circuit MFC-CWs exhibited superior removal efficiency compared to traditional CWs. Adding sponge iron to the anode layer improved the removal of NO3--N but had limited effect on MC-LR removal. The integration of MFC into CWs shows promise in controlling eutrophication and MCs pollution.

Removal of microplastics and attached heavy metals from secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant using interpenetrating bipolar plate electrocoagulation

Runyu Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mixed pollutants of microplastics and heavy metals were effectively removed from the secondary effluent of a wastewater treatment plant using an interpenetrating bipolar plate electrocoagulation (IBPE) reactor. The experimental process showed high removal efficiency for both heavy metals and microplastics. The optimization of removal efficiency was achieved with specific current density, initial pH, and reaction time. Mathematical models and pseudo-voltammetry curve analysis provided insights into the changes in removal rate over time and the complexation forms of heavy metals and surface groups of microplastics. The results suggested that IBPE could be a valuable clean technology for simultaneously removing microplastics and heavy metals from wastewater.

Impact of microplastics on the treatment performance of constructed wetlands: Based on substrate characteristics and microbial activities

Xiangyu Yang et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater poses significant risks to ecosystems. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are effective in intercepting MPs, but the impact of MP accumulation on CWs' performance is not well understood. This study conducted a 370-day experiment and found that MP accumulation changed the biofilm composition, substrate porosity, and oxygen mass transfer in CWs, leading to a decline in nitrogen removal efficiency. These findings provide insights into the effects of MPs on physicochemical and microbial characteristics in CWs, which can guide the regulation of MPs in wetland environments.

Electrochemical and microbiological response of exoelectrogenic biofilm to polyethylene microplastics in water

Song Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of polyethylene (PE) microplastics on exoelectrogenic biofilm. The experiments reveal that an increase in PE microplastics concentration leads to a decline in current density and abundance of electroactive bacteria in the biofilm. The viability of the biofilm is also restrained by the presence of PE microplastics, resulting in higher system electrode resistance. Furthermore, microbial community richness and expression of electron transfer-related genes decrease after the addition of microplastics.

Pulsatile contractions promote apoptotic cell extrusion in epithelial tissues

Youmna Atieh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that cell extrusion is preceded by pulsatile actomyosin contractions, which are crucial for defining the behavioral differences between extruding and non-extruding cells. Local increases in tension are shown to drive cell pulsing, while damage to many cells leads to an overall decrease in the tensile state of the epithelium.

Microplastics and plankton: Knowledge from laboratory and field studies to distinguish contamination from pollution

Sabrina M. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Microplastics are hypothesized to have a major impact on smaller organisms such as plankton, with current research mainly focusing on laboratory studies. Field studies are relatively scarce, and there is a lack of comparability between laboratory and field conditions and methods. Knowledge gaps include the lack of field studies, incomparability between laboratory and field conditions, and limited diversity of plankton species studied.

Comprehensive metagenomic and enzyme activity analysis reveals the negatively influential and potentially toxic mechanism of polystyrene nanoparticles on nitrogen transformation in constructed wetlands

Yixuan Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) had a significant inhibitory effect on nitrogen transformation in constructed wetlands, particularly in short-term exposure experiments. PS NPs mainly accumulated in the biofilm of wetlands, affecting a range of enzyme activities related to nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant systems. The toxic mechanisms of PS NPs may involve altering the abundance of nitrogen transformation genes and key genes in carbon metabolism.
