Context-dependent effects of shifting large herbivore assemblages on plant structure and diversity

Devyn A. Orr et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of wild herbivores and cattle on plant communities and finds that they have different effects on vegetation structure and diversity. Furthermore, the study also reveals that these effects vary across different climatic contexts.

Grazing and ecosystem service delivery in global drylands

Fernando T. Maestre et al.

Summary: Interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are crucial in determining the delivery of ecosystem services in drylands worldwide. Increased grazing pressure reduces service delivery in warmer and species-poor areas, while positive effects of grazing are observed in colder and species-rich areas.

Parasite dilution improves lamb growth more than does the complementarity of forage niches in a mesic pasture grazed by sheep and cattle

Frederic Joly et al.

Summary: Agroecological practices can improve livestock farming systems by optimizing biological processes, such as sheep/cattle mixed-grazing. An experiment showed that mixed-grazing can lead to higher liveweight gain in sheep compared to monospecific grazing, mainly due to parasite dilution.

Does mixed vs separate sheep and cattle grazing reduce soil compaction?

Matthew William Jordon

Summary: The degradation of soil in the UK is affecting ecosystem services, particularly water flow regulation. This pilot study found that changes in livestock management, such as mixed sheep and cattle grazing, can lead to rapid improvements in soil physical properties, potentially enhancing soil health and water flow regulation on grazed land in the UK.

Species-specific herbivore grazing of type-specific grassland can assist with promotion of shallow layer of soil carbon sequestration

Jie Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of different herbivore assemblages on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in grasslands, finding that cattle grazing enhanced SOC storage in mesic grasslands, while sheep grazing significantly increased SOC storage in xeric grasslands. In addition, mixed grazing of sheep and cattle consistently increased SOC storage across all grassland types.

Root, not aboveground litter, controls soil carbon storage under grazing exclusion across grasslands worldwide

Jishuai Su et al.

Summary: Grazing exclusion is an effective management strategy for improving grasslands degraded by overgrazing, as it enhances plant production and soil carbon storage globally. The effects of grazing exclusion on litter production and soil carbon storage are influenced by herbivore body size, climate conditions, and duration of exclusion. The increase in aboveground litter biomass induced by grazing exclusion is mainly attributed to the increase in graminoid biomass, and the enhancement of soil carbon storage is possibly due to the response of root biomass along a precipitation gradient.

Mixed Grazing and Dietary Supplementation Improve the Response to Gastrointestinal Nematode Parasitism and Production Performances of Goats

Jean-Christophe Bambou et al.

Summary: The study found that mixed grazing and dietary supplementation have significant effects on the performance of goat kids, resulting in lower fecal egg counts and higher packed cell volume. The non-supplemented group had higher fecal egg counts, but supplementation did not have a significant impact on packed cell volume. Supplementation significantly increased body weight, body condition score, and packed cell volume.

Seasonality regulates the effects of resource addition on plant diversity and ecosystem functioning in semi-arid grassland

Feng-Wei Xu et al.

Summary: The impact of resource enrichment on species richness, ANPP, and stability in semi-arid grasslands varies among seasons. Water and nitrogen inputs did not affect community ANPP in May and June, but enhanced ANPP in July and August. Species asynchrony may be a key mechanism contributing to community stability in different seasons, with perennial bunchgrasses stability playing a role in controlling stability under resource enrichment. These results highlight the importance of considering seasonality and resource availability in managing semi-arid grasslands to mitigate the impact of land use and global change.
