Restoring phosphorus from water to soil: Using calcined eggshells for P adsorption and subsequent application of the adsorbent as a P fertilizer

Jae-In Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the solution for two environmental issues: excess of P in water and its deficiency in soil by using eggshell as an adsorbent to transfer the adsorbed P from water into the soil. Eggshells calcined at 800 degrees C showed the highest P adsorption capacity, successfully removing P from water as hydroxylapatite. When used as a filter medium under dynamic flow conditions, CES-800 achieved over 90% P removal within 158 hours.

Summary: This study aims to monitor the changes in existing vegetation in the area after the construction of wind power plants using remote sensing and geographic information systems. The results show that the construction of wind power plants has some negative impacts on slope and aspect. The study also highlights the importance of GIS and RS in this field.

Removal of phosphorus from water using calcium-rich organic waste and its potential as a fertilizer for rice growth

Jae-In Lee et al.

Summary: Mussel shell waste was used to produce value-added products for P removal in lakes and P fertilizer. The calcination process improved the P adsorption capacity of mussel shells and increased the release of calcium ions. The calcined mussel shells were used as an adsorbent to form hydroxyapatite and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models. pH and coexisting anions affected the adsorption amount, and the fixed-bed column experiment showed a high P removal rate.

Analysis of mixed cattle manure: Kinetics and thermodynamic comparison of pyrolysis and combustion processes

Muhammad Ashraf et al.

Summary: The study investigates the non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis of cattle manure at varied heating rates to compare the kinetic and thermodynamic behaviors of cattle manure in N-2 and air atmospheres. The results show different kinetic behaviors in pyrolysis and combustion processes, with different activation energy values and frequency factors, indicating complexity in both. Pyrolysis follows 2-Diffusion reaction models, while combustion follows 3-Power law and reaction Order-1 in different stages.

Assessing the effects of wind farms on soil organic carbon

Ozge Isik Pekkan et al.

Summary: The study found that the establishment of wind farms in the Karaburun Peninsula resulted in a total decrease of 18,330.57 tons of soil organic carbon in the study area between 2000 and 2019. The findings highlight the potential environmental issues caused by wind farms, such as climate change, and emphasize the need for a comprehensive reevaluation of investments in renewable energy sources.

Recycling of bottom ash derived from combustion of cattle manure and its adsorption behaviors for Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II)

Seung-Hee Hong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of bottom ash generated from the combustion of cattle manure as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) onto the bottom ash followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was well-described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption onto the bottom ash was endothermic, and the presence of cations such as Na+, Ca2+, and Al3+ reduced the amount of metals adsorbed onto the BA-CCM.

Jae-In Lee et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of oyster shell waste as an adsorbent for phosphorus recovery from eutrophic lakes and as a slow-release fertilizer for rice growth in soil. The thermally treated OySh-800 showed high phosphorus adsorption capacity, which significantly promoted rice growth in pot experiments.
