A review of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) studies of Mediterranean catchments: Applications, feasibility, and future directions

Sarra Aloui et al.

Summary: This study reviews the SWAT studies conducted on Mediterranean watersheds and finds that SWAT has been extensively applied to assess water resources and evaluate the impacts of land use and climate changes in this region. The study highlights the flexibility and multi-purpose use of SWAT, as well as the need for accurate model inputs and testing data. However, data availability remains a challenge, and efforts should be made to improve it for optimizing SWAT performance.

Snowfall Variation in Eastern Mediterranean Catchments

Kalliopi Artemis Voudouri et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the time series of snow parameters in representative geographical areas of the Eastern Mediterranean and examine their seasonal variability. The satellite retrievals show increasing trends of snow water equivalent, with decreasing trends starting from 2010 until now. Similar patterns are found in the Italian study area. These results contribute to a better understanding of snow distribution and its seasonality, which is crucial for long-term groundwater management.

Assessment of intrinsic aquifer vulnerability at continental scale through a critical application of the drastic framework: The case of South America

Fabrizio Rama et al.

Summary: This study presents an assessment of the vulnerability of South America's aquifers using the DRASTIC method. The results classify the continent into five vulnerability classes, with the Amazon region, coastal aquifers, Andean valleys, and alluvial aquifers of main rivers being highly vulnerable. The depth to water table is identified as the most significant factor. The study provides a valuable foundation for sustainable land-use and water management in South America.

Beach pollution from marine litter: Analysis with the DPSIR framework (driver, pressure, state, impact, response) in Tuscany, Italy

Ileana Federigi et al.

Summary: This study explored the issue of beach-stranded material using the DPSIR framework and developed a data-based classification for analysis. Through fieldwork and data collection in an Italian coastal municipality, it was found that solid waste production and local sewage production had significant impacts on the accumulation of stranded material, while local waterways had a negligible contribution to marine litter.

A DPSIR Approach to Selected Cr(VI) Impacted Groundwater Bodies of Central Greece

Konstantina Pyrgaki et al.

Summary: The study applied the DPSIR methodology to investigate the impact of Cr(VI) on groundwater bodies in Central Greece. It identified agricultural activities, urban and industrial development, and tourism as the main driving forces, leading to groundwater stress caused by contamination from anthropogenic activities. A management framework was proposed to address the complex environmental issue of Cr(VI) in the study areas.

Testing Evapotranspiration Estimates Based on MODIS Satellite Data in the Assessment of the Groundwater Recharge of Karst Aquifers in Southern Italy

Giovanni Ruggieri et al.

Summary: This research focuses on estimating actual evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge for southern Apennines karst aquifers using remotely sensed data collected by the MODIS satellite from 2000 to 2014. By comparing different methods with MODIS data, a new methodological perspective is presented for assessing groundwater recharge at regional scales, reducing uncertainties and improving spatial resolution.

Khabat Khosravi et al.

Summary: The study found that combinations based on HCO3- were strongly correlated with predictions of As and Ba concentrations, while Na+ was the most effective variable for predicting Rb concentration. Models that utilized all available input variables generally provided the most accurate predictions.

Climate change and its impact on the projected values of groundwater recharge: A review

Dima Al Atawneh et al.

Summary: Research on the influence of climate change on groundwater recharge reveals that there is significant uncertainty in the models used, with most studies only considering inter-model uncertainty and not fully addressing intra-model uncertainty or emission scenario uncertainty. Overall, a decline in groundwater recharge can be expected in most regions, though the extent of the decline varies based on emission scenarios and seasons.

Simulating Future Groundwater Recharge in Coastal and Inland Catchments

Gianluigi Busico et al.

Summary: Groundwater recharge was quantified using SWAT in coastal and inland hydrological basins in Greece, with accurate calibration and simulation results obtained for the Mouriki and Anthemountas basins. Significant variations in groundwater recharge are predicted in the coastal zone, while variations in the inland catchment of Mouriki are insignificant. Groundwater management strategies, including detailed monitoring and seasonal recharge adjustments, should be implemented in coastal aquifers.
