Evaluating priority locations and potential benefits for building a nation-wide fuel break network in Portugal

Bruno A. Aparicio et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of the planned fuel break network (FBN) in Portugal in meeting fire management objectives, costs, and benefits. The results showed a potential reduction in the annual burned area due to large fires, the annual number of exposed residential buildings, and the annual burned area in protected areas. However, the effectiveness of the FBN varied among segments and the current implementation sequence was suboptimal. Additional landscape-scale fuel reduction strategies are needed to meet short-term national wildfire management targets.

A systematic review of empirical evidence for landscape-level fuel treatment effectiveness

Shawn T. McKinney et al.

Summary: The research on the measures for controlling wildfires is still in its early stages, and the existing data is insufficient to be widely applied. Fuel treatments within treatment boundaries have an impact on wildfire behavior, but the impact outside treatment boundaries is unclear. Future research needs to develop innovative methods to improve the effectiveness of fuel treatments.

Summary: The study discusses the multidimensional effects of various drivers, such as human activity, geographic and topographic factors, and land cover, in fire risk management. It highlights the importance of informed decision making through preventive policies to minimize risk and adapt to new environmental conditions for co-existence with wildfires.

Summary: The destructive potential of wildfires has been exacerbated by climate change, highlighting the importance of fuel-treatment plans. The proposed framework integrates fire spread, optimization, and simulation models, introducing the concept of Downstream Protection Value and showing through experiments that the model can effectively reduce wildfire losses.

Wildfires and global change

Juli G. Pausas et al.

Summary: Wildfires occur when fire thresholds are crossed, and anomalous weather events may enhance the likelihood and spread of wildfires. Climate change increases the frequency with which some thresholds are crossed, but other factors like altered ignition patterns and fuel structures also play a significant role in global fire-regime changes. The size of a fire ultimately depends on the duration of fire weather and the availability of continuous fuels in the landscape.
