Honglei Guo et al.

Summary: Serious cyanobacterial blooms caused by lake eutrophication have become a global problem, impacting human production, life, and health. This study examined the characteristics and differences of cyanobacterial blooms patterns in Lakes Chaohu and Taihu over the past 20 years. The severity of blooms showed a similar decreasing-then-increasing trend in both lakes, but with variations in different years. Temperature was identified as the most important driving factor, and TP played a more significant role in recent years.

Spatiotemporal heterogeneities and driving factors of water quality and trophic state of a typical urban shallow lake (Taihu, China)

Yonggui Wang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the spatiotemporal changes of water quality and eutrophication in Lake Taihu and its sub-lakes from 2015 to 2019. The results showed that Lake Taihu had poor water quality and maintained a light-eutropher state overall. The main contributors to the spatial heterogeneity in water quality were the massive nutrient loads caused by human activity and the geomorphological characteristic of the north closed bays. The study suggests that the restoration of water pollution and eutrophication in Lake Taihu should focus on nutrient reductions and those heavily polluted closed bays.

Combining hydrochemistry and hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes to reveal the influence of human activities on surface water quality in Chaohu Lake Basin

Lanlan Zheng et al.

Summary: The input of pollutants from human activities deteriorates the surface water quality in Chaohu Lake Basin. The hydrochemical characteristics and stable isotope composition of lake water and inflow river water were analyzed to understand the influence of human activities. The results show that the water chemistry and ions in surface water are affected by both rock weathering and human activities. The stable isotope analysis indicates that surface water mainly originates from precipitation. Pollution indicators suggest severe pollution in certain rivers due to sewage and agricultural fertilizers.

Zongqi Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causes and driving mechanisms of lake surface water temperature (LSWT) changes in six lakes in China. The results show that near surface air temperature (NSAT) has a significant correlation with LSWT, especially in spring, autumn, and winter. Natural factors, particularly NSAT, have a higher contribution to LSWT compared to anthropogenic factors. The intensity of anthropogenic factors on LSWT varies depending on lake type, NSAT, precipitation, and lake area.
