Phosphorus adsorption by functionalized biochar: a review

Dan Luo et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is a crucial element for agricultural production but its non-renewable phosphate ore resources are depleting. Phosphate release from wastewater treatment plants and inefficient crop fertilization causes pollution such as water eutrophication. Therefore, phosphorus recovery from wastewater through biochar adsorption is a promising alternative agricultural phosphorus source. Biochar, with its porous structure, large surface area, abundant surface groups, and high mineral content, can effectively adsorb phosphorus. Additionally, functionalization of biochar can improve its adsorption performance.

Research on Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Methods of SBR and Anoxic Oxic Urban Sewage Treatment System

Mei Bai et al.

Summary: With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, more sewage treatment plants have been constructed. However, these plants are also significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. This study conducted experiments on two commonly used treatment processes, A/O and SBR, to analyze the factors influencing greenhouse gas emissions. The results showed that the A/O method emitted a total of 415.63 gCO(2)-eq/m(3) of greenhouse gases, while the SBR method emitted 879.51 gCO(2)-eq/m(3). The research provides valuable insights for managing sewage treatment plants and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

Tapping the energy potential from wastewater by integrating high-rate activated sludge process with anaerobic membrane bioreactor

Muxiang Liang et al.

Summary: Advances in wastewater treatment have led to new developments in energy recovery from wastewater. Integrating high-rate activated sludge process (HRAS) with anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) shows promise for energy-positive wastewater management. Experimental and modeling investigations of a lab-scale HRAS-AnMBR system demonstrated that reducing sludge retention time could improve COD capture efficiency and methane production, but there may be a trade-off between carbon capture and effluent quality in the HRAS process under different operating conditions.

Electrochemically mediated precipitation of phosphate minerals for phosphorus removal and recovery: Progress and perspective

Yicheng Wang et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is an essential element for organisms, but the natural phosphorus cycle has been disrupted by overexploitation and discharge into water bodies. Electrochemically induced phosphate precipitation offers a potential solution for phosphorus recovery by creating a localized high pH environment. Factors such as pH, current density, electrode configuration, and water matrix affect the performance of electrochemical systems. Future research should focus on evaluating long-term performance, developing an automatic process for harvesting deposits, and assessing economic feasibility.

Transparent exopolymer particles (TEPs)-associated protobiofilm: A neglected contributor to biofouling during membrane filtration

Shujuan Meng et al.

Summary: This study found that transparent exopolymer particles (TEPs) in combination with bacteria-formed protobiofilms play a vital role in the development of membrane biofouling, accelerating the transport of bacteria and leading to rapid biofouling on membrane surfaces. This phenomenon, often overlooked, challenges current understanding of organic and biofouling as the TEP-protobiofilm combination causes membrane fouling. It is suggested that further research is needed to develop effective mitigation strategies for membrane fouling.
