Ultrafast degradation of emerging organic pollutants via activation of peroxymonosulfate over Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x: Singlet oxygen evolution and electron-transfer mechanisms

Summary: Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 materials were successfully fabricated via one-pot calcination using a green precursor. The materials exhibited excellent activation of PMS for fast removal of emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. The nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs allowed for trace Fe leaching and easy magnetic separation for recycling. Singlet oxygen and electron-transfer were identified as the main mechanisms for organic pollutant removal.

Improvement of Fe2+/peroxymonosulfate oxidation of organic pollutants by promoting Fe2+ regeneration with visible light driven g-C3N4 photocatalysis

Valorization of ball-milled waste red mud into heterogeneous catalyst as effective peroxymonosulfate activator for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation

Summary: In this study, ball-milled high-iron red mud was found to be an effective activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. The ball milling process improved the physicochemical properties of the red mud, resulting in increased surface area, oxygen vacancies, electrical conductivity, and exposure of Fe(II) sites. The degradation pathways of tetracycline hydrochloride were driven by hydroxylation, N-demethylation, and dehydration. The ball-milled red mud showed good stability and reusability, making it a promising catalyst for wastewater treatment.

Selective hydrogenation of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol over Pd, Pt, and Au catalysts supported on an advanced nitrogen-containing carbon material produced from food waste

Summary: Food waste is a global issue that negatively impacts the environment and leads to high carbon emissions. This study proposes a thermo-chemical activation method to convert fermentation residue from a mixture of food waste and sludge into a nitrogen-enriched carbon material. This material can be used to synthesize catalysts for the hydrogenation of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol, increasing its commercial value sixfold. The catalytic performance of Pd/C catalyst outperforms Pt/C and Au/C catalysts, exhibiting high reusability and stability.

Fast removal of bisphenol A by coconut shell biochar incorporated ?-MnO2 composites via peroxymonosulfate activation

Summary: In this study, coconut shell biochars (CSB) with different pyrolysis temperature were prepared and incorporated with alpha-MnO2 for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in water. The presence of CSB significantly improved the catalytic activity of alpha-MnO2 by improving its dispersion, exposing more active sites, and enhancing electron transfer rate. The composite of alpha-MnO2/CSB showed good performance under a wide pH range and had both radical and non-radical pathways for BPA degradation. The study provides new insights into the design of composite catalysts for water decontamination using biochar.
