Effects of pyrolysis temperature and aging treatment on the adsorption of Cd2+ and Zn2+ by coffee grounds biochar

Yuxin Ke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pyrolysis temperature and aging treatment on the adsorption performance of coffee grounds biochar (CGB) for Cd2+ and Zn2+. The results showed that the adsorption performance of fresh CGB increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, while the adsorption performance of aged CGB peaked at medium pyrolysis temperature and decreased at higher temperatures. The XRD results indicated that the graphitization degree of CGB increased with pyrolysis temperature, leading to improved environmental stability. EDS and FTIR results suggested that ion-exchange and complexation played a dominant role in the adsorption processes, and the aging treatment improved the selectivity for Cd2+.

A review of spatiotemporal patterns of neonicotinoid insecticides in water, sediment, and soil across China

Zhikun Liu et al.

Summary: This study examines the pollution levels and spatial distribution patterns of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) in various environmental media across China. The results show that NNIs are predominantly found in surface water, with lower concentrations in sediments and the highest concentrations in soils. The levels of NNIs are highest in southern China due to agricultural activities and warm and humid conditions. The monitored data demonstrates a decreasing trend in NNIs concentrations, possibly due to the implementation of control policies.

Tetrabromobisphenol A and hexabromocyclododecanes in sediments from fishing ports along the coast of South China: Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk

Yun-Feng Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution status of TBBPA and HBCDDs in sediments from fishing ports along the coast of South China. The concentrations of TBBPA and HBCDDs were strongly associated with local population density, but weakly correlated with total organic carbon content. γ-HBCDD was found to be the predominant diastereoisomer in the sediments.

Occurrence and distribution of OCPs and PAHs in water, soil and sediment of Daye lake

Seerat Ul Ain Bhutto et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of various organic pollutants in the water, sediment, and soil of Daye lake, with OCPs and PAHs being the main contaminants. Furthermore, the study found that these pollutants mainly originate from fossil fuels, biomass, and coal combustion. Ecological risk assessment of Daye lake indicated that carcinogenic PAHs in water and soil pose a 10% risk to the environment, while OCPs in sediments have a visible impact on ecology.

Gaga Mahai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination status of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) and their metabolites in drinking water across China, finding variations in concentrations and patterns of NNIs in different regions, mainly influenced by differences in crop types and pesticide usage. Some drinking water samples exceeded the acceptable value recommended by the European Union, posing potential human health risks.

Health risks to dietary neonicotinoids are low for Chinese residents based on an analysis of 13 daily-consumed foods

Kai Cui et al.

Summary: A nationwide survey in China found that neonicotinoid pesticide residues were detected in 62.21% of food samples, with 37.58% being contaminated with 2-7 different neonicotinoids. The study evaluated chronic and acute exposure risks, indicating that neonicotinoid exposure was within established safety limits, but children had a higher acute risk compared to the general population.

The human and ecological risks of neonicotinoid insecticides in soils of an agricultural zone within the Pearl River Delta, South China

Zimin Yu et al.

Summary: Neonicotinoid insecticides are commonly found in agricultural soil in the Pearl River Delta region of South China, with higher detection rates and concentrations in vegetable farms compared to rice paddies and fruit farms. The human exposure risk assessment indicates that the residual levels of neonicotinoids in agricultural soils could potentially have sublethal or acute effects on non-target terrestrial organisms. More research is needed to fully address the human and ecological risks associated with neonicotinoid contamination in agricultural soils in South China.

Toxicity and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water, sediments and groundwater vulnerability in Damodar River Basin

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: The comprehensive investigation of PAHs in surface water and sediment samples of the Damodar River Basin revealed the presence of 3-ring and 4-ring PAHs, primarily originating from anthropogenic activities such as petrogenic and fuel combustion. The contamination in surface water was attributed to petrogenic and fuel combustion sources while sediments showed contribution from coal burning, fuel combustion, petrogenic, and pyrolysis. The concentrations of PAHs indicated potential health and ecological risks associated with improper management practices in the area.

Health Risk Assessment and Characterization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon from the Hydrosphere

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water bodies in India, finding that the Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers were more contaminated with PAHs. The dominant PAHs in the samples were low molecular weight Naphthalene and high molecular weight Pyrene. The study suggests that combustion and petrogenic sources within the city may be the main origins of PAHs in the area.
