Effects of land use, climate, and imperviousness on urban stormwater quality: A meta-analysis

Ian M. Simpson et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on stormwater quality data from 360 urban catchments worldwide, finding that urban land use and land cover, as well as climate, have a greater impact on runoff water quality compared to imperviousness. Different land use types and climate zones significantly affect runoff quality, especially the generation of certain metals and nitrogen species. Multiple linear regression models proved to be significant predictors of urban runoff quality, offering insights for better informing stormwater quality models and total maximum loads.

Natural compensation mechanism of soil water infiltration through decayed roots in semi-arid vegetation species

Zeng Cui et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of root channels on soil water content and infiltration in two drought-tolerant plant species. The findings demonstrate that preferential flow formed through decomposed roots contributes to soil water replenishment and alleviates soil desiccation.

Application of biochar in modification of fillers in bioretention cells: A review

Jiaqing Xiong et al.

Summary: Biochar, with its low carbon content, ease of preparation, environmental protection functions, and excellent performance, has been extensively used in soil improvement and bioretention cells. This review focuses on the water-retention capacity of biochar, its influence on the water permeability of fillers, and its ability to remove contaminants in bioretention cells, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, organic compounds, pathogenic microorganisms, and heavy metals. The study also discusses the potential applications of biochar-modified fillers and biochar-modified bioretention, as well as related issues.

Biochar improves soil physical characteristics and strengthens root architecture in Muscadine grape (Vitis rotundifolia L.)

Yuru Chang et al.

Summary: Biochar significantly enhanced soil physical properties by increasing water-holding capacity, reducing bulk density, and improving soil porosity. Furthermore, it strengthened root architecture by promoting root length, number of root forks, and crossings, ultimately enhancing root development in woody plants.

Does biochar application improve soil aggregation? A meta-analysis

Mahbub Ul Islam et al.

Summary: Biochar as a potential soil amendment can significantly improve soil aggregation through different biochar attributes, soil properties, and experimental conditions. Wood biochar with higher pyrolysis temperature and a larger amount of biochar have a more positive influence on soil aggregation. Wet sieving method is more effective in assessing soil aggregation than dry sieving method. Additionally, soil aggregation is enhanced in neutral and acidic soils, and loam-textured soils compared to sandy soils.

Bioretention systems for stormwater management: Recent advances and future prospects

Kuppusamy Vijayaraghavan et al.

Summary: Bioretention is a popular stormwater management strategy used in urban environments to combat water quality and hydrological impacts of stormwater. Most research contributions come from a few countries and research groups, leading to operational failures in diverse geographical locations. Future research needs to consider bioretention design in different climates and address current technical challenges.
