Recent developments in anammox-based membrane bioreactors: A review

Fuqiang Chen et al.

Summary: The anammox-based process, a biological nitrogen elimination method, has been considered promising for nitrogen-rich wastewater treatment since its discovery 40 years ago. However, slow growth rate of anammox bacteria and severe sludge washout limit its industrial application. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is an ideal reactor for anammox-based process due to its biomass retention capability. This review focuses on the application of MBR in different anammox processes, as well as the fouling mechanism and strategies for membrane fouling control, providing valuable guidance for future research and engineering applications of anammox-based MBR.

Responses of microbial interactions to elevated salinity in activated sludge microbial community

Tao Ya et al.

Summary: Biological treatment processes play a crucial role in sewage purification, and microbial interactions have a significant impact on treatment performance. This study investigated the microbial interactions in an activated sludge system under elevated salinity using association network analysis. The results showed that higher salinity led to lower microbial diversity and more competitive overall networks, resulting in reduced treatment process efficiency. The subnetworks of major phyla and functional bacteria differed significantly under elevated salinity, with Nitrosomonas making a greater contribution to nitrification and denitrifiers establishing more cooperative relationships to resist salinity stress. Keystone species crucial for process stability were found to be dynamic and less abundant under salinity disturbance. This study deepened our understanding of microbial interactions in activated sludge systems under elevated salinity.

Removal of ammonium and nitrate through Anammox and FeS-driven autotrophic denitrification

Yanfei Wang et al.

Summary: An autotrophic denitrifying bioreactor with FeS as the electron donor was operated for over 298 days to synergistically remove NH4+ and NO3- from wastewater. The concentration of FeS significantly influenced the removal of NH4+/NO3-. A low hydraulic retention time led to a decrease in removal efficiency. At a hydraulic retention time of 12 h, optimal removal was achieved with NH4+ and NO3- removal percentages above 88%, and nitrogen removal loading rates of 49.1 and 44.0 mg/(L.d) for NH4+ and NO3- respectively.

China's carbon neutrality: an extensive and profound systemic reform

Xi Lu et al.

Summary: China, as the largest developing economy and carbon dioxide emitter, has a significant role in shaping the global climate change mitigation pathway through its carbon neutrality goal. The transition to a carbon-neutral society in China is integrated into the construction of ecological civilization and has profound implications for the country's socioeconomic development. This article not only highlights the major challenges in achieving carbon neutrality in China, but also identifies four potential new opportunities: accelerating technological innovations, narrowing regional disparities through reshaping resource values, transforming industrial structures, and reaping co-benefits of pollution and carbon mitigation. Furthermore, the importance of balancing economic growth and carbon mitigation, as well as the collaborative efforts among government, enterprises, and residents, is emphasized through the provision of five policy suggestions.

In a quest for high-efficiency mainstream partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) implementation: One-stage or two-stage?

Shenbin Cao et al.

Summary: Partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) process is an energy-efficient technology for wastewater nitrogen removal. However, the efficiency and effectiveness of nitrogen removal in PN/A processes for low-strength municipal wastewater treatment are still low, making large-scale implementation challenging. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of one-stage and two-stage PN/A processes and emphasizes the importance of addressing operational challenges, such as out-selection of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), to achieve desired effluent quality.

Challenges, solutions and prospects of mainstream anammox-based process for municipal wastewater treatment

Lisheng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the challenges and solutions of mainstream anammox-based process by reviewing the literature of the past decade. The slow growth rate of anammox bacteria and the need for enhancing bacteria retention are identified as the main challenges. Various methods to culture anammox bacteria and improve their activity are discussed. Other challenges include the elimination of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and achieving the ideal ratio of NH4+ and NO2-. To overcome these challenges, composite control strategies based on low sludge retention time (SRT) and limited aeration are suggested. Interference from low temperature and influent components in actual wastewater treatment is addressed, as well as the use of coupling processes to reduce nitrate concentration in the effluent. The paper concludes with future prospects for the mainstream anammox-based process.
