Different reaction mechanisms of SO4•-and •OH with organic compound interpreted at molecular orbital level in Co(II)/peroxymonosulfate catalytic activation system

Huixuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) and sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) have been widely studied in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for organic pollutants degradation. In this study, a Co(II)/peroxymonosulfate activation system was established to degrade caffeine (CAF), and the different attack routes of SO4 center dot- and center dot OH were explored. It was found that SO4 center dot- is more likely to attack CAF kinetically, while only center dot OH can react via hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) route. Radical adduct formation (RAF) is the most favorable route for both center dot OH and SO4 center dot- attack. These findings provide insights into the degradation mechanism of organic pollutants in AOPs driven by center dot OH and SO4 center dot-.

Sulfite as a Green Co-milling Agent for Mechanochemical Destruction of Polychlorinated Aromatics: Working Mechanism and Structural Dependence

Zimo Lou et al.

Summary: Mechanochemical destruction is a safe non-combustion technology for disposing of obsolete halogenated persistent organic chemicals. This study demonstrates that Na2SO3 as a co-milling agent achieves faster degradation rates for hexachlorobenzene (HCB) compared to calcium oxide and reduced iron powders. The mechanism involves the generation of SO32- species on fresh surfaces which attack HCB molecules via one-electron-transfer. This work provides new insights for the green disposal of halogenated wastes using sulfite.

Mechanochemical degradation of hexachlorobenzene with a combined additive of SiC and Fe

Maofeng Nie et al.

Summary: The addition of iron powder to Mechanochemical treatment (MCT) can prevent the production of toxic product CCl4 and accelerate the degradation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The combined additive of SiC and Fe can further optimize the reaction by maintaining the stability of SiC while enhancing the degradation process.

Deciphering CaO-induced peroxydisulfate activation for destruction of halogenated organic pollutants in a low energy vibrational mill

Zimo Lou et al.

Summary: Mechanochemical treatment using calcium oxide (CaO) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) as co-milling agents has been developed for the degradation of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs). This study investigates the role of CaO in activating PDS and the mechanism of PDS activation in solid phase reactions. The results show that CaO-PDS co-milling agent significantly enhances the degradation and dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) compared to CaO or PDS alone. CaO shifts the degradation pathway into dechlorination and ring-open routes, increasing the mineralization efficiency. The study also reveals that CaO activates PDS mainly through electron transfer and base activation. The CaO-PDS co-milling agent shows high reactivity in destructing persistent HOPs. The findings of this study have important implications for the safe disposal of obsolete HOPs.

Molecular Structure and Sulfur Content Affect Reductive Dechlorination of Chlorinated Ethenes by Sulfidized Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron

Yalan Mo et al.

Summary: This study reveals the influence of sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (SNZVI) on the dechlorination reactivity and selectivity of chlorinated ethenes (CEs). SNZVI exhibits significantly improved dechlorination reactivity and selectivity compared to zerovalent iron, depending on the chlorine number, chlorine position, and sulfur content of the CEs. By controlling the sulfidation degree of SNZVI, the dechlorination pathway and reactivity of CEs can be altered. These findings are important for the rational design of SNZVI for in situ groundwater remediation of various CEs.

Products distribution and contribution of (de)chlorination, hydroxylation and coupling reactions to 2,4-dichlorophenol removal in seven oxidation systems

Xiaoxue Pan et al.

Summary: The transformation behavior of 2,4-dichlorophenol (24-DCP) was studied in seven different reaction systems, showing that complete removal of 24-DCP can be achieved in minutes in Fe(VI), KMnO4, NaClO, Fenton, and O-3 systems. LC-MS analysis identified 41 products, primarily hydroxyl substitution and coupling reactions. High chlorination was observed in the NaClO system, while coupling products accounted for about 45% of the removed 24-DCP under PS oxidation.
