Safflower-based biorefinery producing a broad spectrum of biofuels and biochemicals: A life cycle assessment perspective

Homa Hosseinzadeh-Bandbafha et al.

Summary: Global environmental awareness has driven further research on biofuel production and consumption, questioning the sustainability of conventional production pathways using agricultural feedstocks. The use of non-food feedstocks and circular bioeconomy offer promising solutions for sustainable biofuel production, despite challenges like synthetic solvents/chemicals and waste generation.

Statistical and Continuous Wavelet Transformation-Based Analysis of Combustion Instabilities in a Biodiesel-Fueled Compression Ignition Engine

Prabhakar Sharma et al.

Summary: This article presents an experimental evaluation of cyclic variability or combustion instabilities of waste cooking oil biodiesel-diesel blends powered compression ignition engine. Advanced in-vehicle combustion analyzer with a piezoelectric pressure sensor was used for accurate measurements, eliminating experimental uncertainty. Statistical and wavelet analysis methods were used to investigate cyclic variation in combustion. The results of both methods were in agreement with each other, indicating self-validation. Overall combustion analysis, including wavelet analysis and statistical method, suggests that biodiesel blending enhances combustion stability in unmodified diesel engines, resulting in a more silent and smoother engine operation compared to conventional diesel fuel.

Methanol/Ethanol/Butanol-Gasoline Blends Use in Transportation Engine-Part 1: Combustion, Emissions, and Performance Study

Akhilendra Pratap Singh et al.

Summary: Primary alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, and butanol have shown promise as alternative fuels for SI engines. In this study, the combustion, performance, and emission characteristics of alcohol-gasoline blends were assessed through experiments. The results indicated that blending methanol with gasoline resulted in the best combustion and performance, while producing lower emissions.

Avinash Kumar Agarwal et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of biodiesel and baseline diesel on lubricating oil properties and wear after 30,000 km highway driving. Results showed that biodiesel-fueled vehicles had lower viscosity, density, ash content, and significantly reduced soot content in the lubricating oil compared to diesel-fueled vehicles.

Field-Testing of Biodiesel (B100) and Diesel-Fueled Vehicles: Part 1-No Load and Highway Driving Emissions, and Acceleration Characteristics

Avinash Kumar Agarwal et al.

Summary: Biodiesel and mineral diesel were compared in terms of emissions under different conditions, with biodiesel showing lower CO and HC emissions but higher NOx emissions during highway driving. In terms of acceleration, biodiesel-fueled vehicle performed well up to a speed of 90 kmph, however, acceleration decreased noticeably beyond that speed.

Summary: The study focuses on the engine performance and emission characteristics of rapeseed and soya biodiesel dispersion on a novel nanocatalyst at different concentrations, showing that the incorporation of nanoparticles in biodiesel enhances performance by reducing the content of lignin and unsaturated fatty acids. Emissions of NOx, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide increased significantly with higher nanoparticle concentrations, while the addition of nanoparticles reduced CO emissions and improved engine performance in soya seed biodiesel blends with 50 ppm nanoparticles compared to other blends.

Emission and performance behavior of safflower oil biodiesel/diesel blends in DI diesel engine

M. A. Asokan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on biodiesel production from Safflower oil and evaluates the engine performance and emissions of Safflower biodiesel blends. Optimal biodiesel yield conditions were achieved under specific parameters, and the B20 blend showed thermal efficiency close to diesel fuel. The use of SAF biodiesel blends resulted in reduced emissions of CO, HC, and smoke, but increased NOx emissions due to the higher cetane number of SAF biodiesel fuels.

Regulated, Unregulated, and Particulate Emissions From Biodiesel Blend Fueled Transportation Engine

Chetankumar Patel et al.

Summary: Engine experiments with blends of Jatropha and waste cooking oil biodiesels showed higher hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions at low engine loads, while waste cooking oil biodiesel blends had higher oxides of nitrogen emissions. Unregulated emissions were higher at low loads but decreased with higher engine loads. Particulate number concentrations were relatively higher from biodiesel blends compared to mineral diesel.

A comprehensive review on the application of bioethanol/biodiesel in direct injection engines and consequential environmental impact

Md Bazlul Mobin Siddique et al.

Summary: The study discusses the performance and improvement possibilities of direct injection engines powered by biofuel blends, with a focus on three key factors: fuel feasibility, emissions, and engine performance. The review suggests that biofuels perform best with additives or as an additive when used with traditional petroleum fuels, and biodiesels show significant improvement in ignition delay and lower emission of pollutant gas compared to traditional petroleum fuels. However, engines have shown a decrease in power output, torque, and fuel efficiency, with suggested improvements including the addition of nanoparticles, exhaust gas recirculation, ethanol/methanol fumigation, and various methyl esters introduction.
