Advances in electrochemiluminescence luminophores based on small organic molecules for biosensing

Kaiqing Wu et al.

Summary: Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has various advantages and is widely used for sensing, imaging, and single cell analysis. Small organic ECL luminophores, with their biocompatibility and easy modification, play a key role in the performance of ECL applications. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews on small organic ECL luminophores. This review introduces the advantages, emission mechanisms, types, molecular characteristics, and applications of small organic ECL luminophores, and discusses the challenges and prospects in biosensing applications.

Gold nanocluster-confined covalent organic frameworks as bifunctional probes for electrochemiluminescence and colorimetric dual-response sensing of Pb2+

Libo Li et al.

Summary: In this study, novel gold nanocluster-confined covalent organic frameworks (AuNCs@COFs) were successfully fabricated for sensitive and simple dual-mode detection of Pb2+ through electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and colorimetric response. The AuNCs@COFs exhibited enhanced ECL efficiency and peroxidase-like activity, leading to the high sensitivity detection of Pb2+.

A potential-resolved ratiometric electrochemiluminescence aptasensor for Pb2+: Gold nanoclusters and amino-terminated perylene derivative as both emitters and resonance energy transfer donor-acceptor pair

Panao Jiang et al.

Summary: Finding a pair of electrochemiluminescence emitters that can act as both energy donor and acceptor simultaneously is crucial for the development of ratiometric ECL aptasensors based on ECL resonance energy transfer strategy (ECL-RET). In this study, aggregation-induced emission gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and amino-terminated perylene derivative (PTC-NH2) with broad absorption range were combined as a novel ECL-RET donor-acceptor pair. By measuring the ratio of AuNCs and PTC-NH2 ECL intensities, a potential-resolved ratiometric ECL aptasensor for detecting lead ions (Pb2+) was successfully developed with low detection limit and excellent selectivity. The proposed aptasensor demonstrated favorable feasibility for Pb2+ assays in soil samples.

A sensitive photoluminescent sensor based on highly charged monoruthenium(II) complexes for dopamine detection

Qingqing Wang et al.

Summary: A photoluminescent sensor based on a highly charged monoruthenium(II) complex was developed for the selective detection of dopamine in aqueous samples. The sensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity towards dopamine, even in the presence of structurally similar compounds such as adrenaline and norepinephrine. With its simple operation and fast response time, the sensor holds promise for potential applications in human urine samples.

Capsulation of AuNCs with AIE Effect into Metal-Organic Framework for the Marriage of a Fluorescence and Colorimetric Biosensor to Detect Organophosphorus Pesticides

Yue Cai et al.

Summary: A fluorescence-colorimetric dual-signal biosensor was developed for monitoring organophosphorus pesticides by encapsulating AuNCs in a metal-organic framework. This biosensor combines fluorescence and colorimetric signals based on the enzymolysis product of AChE and CHO, allowing detection through the inhibition of AChE activity. Additionally, colorimetric paper strips and a smartphone APP were utilized for visual semiquantitative detection and real-time supervision of pesticide contamination.

Simple Synthetic Routes to Carbene-M-Amido (M=Cu, Ag, Au) Complexes for Luminescence and Photocatalysis Applications

Nikolaos V. Tzouras et al.

Summary: Novel and simple synthetic routes to carbene-metal-amido (CMA) complexes of copper, silver and gold were developed for photonic applications. The use of mild bases and sustainable solvents allowed for reactions to be conducted in air and at room temperature, yielding high amounts of targeted compounds. The photophysical studies demonstrated that the metal plays a key role in determining the occurrence of fluorescent or phosphorescent states, with potential applications beyond luminescence.
