State and Prospects of Unbalanced, Compositionally Symmetric Flow Battery Cycling and Steady-State Amperometry Techniques for Electrolyte Stability Assessment: The Case of Methyl Viologen

Ivan A. Volodin et al.

Summary: An increasing number of redox-active substances with improved electrochemical stability is being studied for potential applications in redox flow batteries. This study compares two recently established stability assessment techniques and evaluates their accuracy in measuring the capacity fade rate of a specific redox species. The results show that both techniques have high standard deviations and may not provide accurate measurements for highly stable redox couples.

Leveraging graphical models to enhance in situ analyte identification via multiple voltammetric techniques

Alexis M. Fenton et al.

Summary: Voltammetry is a powerful analytical technique for evaluating electrochemical reactions and can be used to examine electrolyte solutions suitable for energy storage technologies. By evaluating electrolyte solutions using different voltammetry techniques, the accuracy of estimating electrolyte composition can be improved and analytes with similar electrode potentials can be differentiated more easily. This method can be further enhanced by including multiple voltammetry techniques in the training dataset. Overall, this study demonstrates the utility of sequential and simultaneous methods in evaluating multiple voltammetry datasets for diagnosing electrolyte solutions in electrochemical technologies.

A Method for Quantifying Crossover in Redox Flow Cells through Compositionally Unbalanced Symmetric Cell Cycling

Bertrand J. Neyhouse et al.

Summary: A new method called compositionally unbalanced symmetric cell cycling (CUSCC) is proposed to evaluate species crossover in redox flow batteries (RFBs). This method directly assesses crossover in redox flow cells and provides consistent results with traditional experimental techniques. The study also demonstrates the potential of CUSCC in characterizing species crossover and expanding the RFB testing toolbox.

Automated Measurement of Electrogenerated Redox Species Degradation Using Multiplexed Interdigitated Electrode Arrays

Michael A. Pence et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel platform is developed for determining the rate constant of chemical reactions in solution. The platform uses microfabricated interdigitated electrode arrays (IDAs) with variable gap widths to achieve automated, multiplexed, and robust measurements. The results show that the natural logarithm of collection efficiency is linear with respect to gap width, enabling the determination of the decomposition rate constant of electrogenerated species. The platform allows for the characterization of a wide range of reactions under various conditions and can be applied in high-throughput workflows.

Using voltammetry augmented with physics-based modeling and Bayesian hypothesis testing to identify analytes in electrolyte solutions

Alexis M. Fenton et al.

Summary: A protocol combining experimental voltammetry, physics-driven models, binary hypothesis testing, and Bayesian inference has been developed for robust labeling of analytes in multicomponent solutions across multiple techniques. This approach accurately identified redox-active constituents in a case study involving N-functionalized phenothiazine derivatives, demonstrating its potential for enhancing diagnostic workflows. Further improvements are needed to increase detection accuracy for future applications.

A Nonaqueous Redox-Matched Flow Battery with Charge Storage in Insoluble Polymer Beads

Dukhan Kim et al.

Summary: The nonaqueous redox-matched flow battery (RMFB) stores charge on redox-active moieties tethered to insoluble polymer beads, transferring charge between electrodes and beads via soluble mediators with matching redox potentials. This approach enables high energy density and prevents crossover of active material.

On the Characterization of Membrane Transport Phenomena and Ion Exchange Capacity for Non-Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Remy Richard Jacquemond et al.

Summary: This study develops new methodologies to assess critical membrane properties for NAqRFBs, including ion exchange capacity and species transport. The utilization of ion exchange capacity in non-aqueous electrolytes is found to be lower compared to aqueous systems, and mass transport is investigated. However, the approach has limitations in concentrated electrolyte systems.

Toward a Mechanically Rechargeable Solid Fuel Flow Battery Based on Earth-Abundant Materials

Alexis M. Fenton Jr et al.

Summary: Metal-air batteries have great potential for energy storage, but their adoption has been hindered by material limitations. In this study, we propose a solid fuel flow battery architecture that combines the energy density of metal-air batteries and the modularity of redox flow batteries. By spatially separating the metallic solid electrochemical fuel (SEF) from the anodic current collector and using a dissolved redox mediator (RM) to shuttle charges, we are able to mitigate the effects of metal passivation and improve active material utilization.

Too Much of a Good Thing? Assessing Performance Tradeoffs of Two-Electron Compounds for Redox Flow Batteries

Bertrand J. Neyhouse et al.

Summary: Engineering redox-active compounds for stable multi-electron transfer is a strategy to enhance energy density and reduce cost in redox flow batteries. However, disparate redox potentials in sequential electron transfers lead to performance tradeoffs, limiting design space. Theoretical models show that multi-electron compounds with concerted electron transfer are more attractive than those with different redox potentials.
