Corrosion Resistance of Amorphous-Nanocrystalline Composite Structure Materials

Qijun Xia et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to investigate the corrosion resistance of different nanoscale microstructures in the same material system and propose a novel method to obtain high-performance materials. Microstructure refinement and microalloying have become the main methods to prepare high-performance materials. The results show that the material loss of the amorphous-nanocrystalline coating is about 1/4 that of the crystalline coating at 8 MPa, and the hydrostatic pressure has a significant acceleration effect on the corrosion rate.

A review of modulation strategies for improving catalytic performance of transition metal phosphides for oxygen evolution reaction

Chen-Jin Huang et al.

Summary: In this review, the preparation of highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts using transition metal phosphides (TMPs) as an example is analyzed. The evaluation criteria of OER reaction are introduced, and strategies for improving the intrinsic activity of active sites and increasing the number of active sites/active surface area are discussed. Key issues and challenges for future development are also proposed. Overall, the review provides valuable insights into the development of efficient OER catalysts.

Engineering nickel phosphides for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution: A doping perspective

Lutfi K. Putri et al.

Summary: Hydrogen fuel is considered a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels, and water electrolysis is seen as a key technology for achieving a hydrogen economy. Nickel phosphides (NixPy), among transition metal-based compounds, have emerged as low-cost and catalytically active electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This review provides an overview of various doping approaches and explores the effects of doping on NixPy, aiming to guide the rational design of NixPy for efficient HER catalysis.

Modulating the active sites of nickel phosphorous by pulse-reverse electrodeposition for improving electrochemical water splitting

Byung Keun Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduces pulse-reverse electrodeposition (PRED) as a method to improve the properties of nickel phosphorus (NiP) films and enhance the performance of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The research explores the effects of electrochemical parameters in PRED on HER and OER activities, revealing that changes in the dissolution step of PRED have opposite impacts on these two activities. The study shows that increased dissolution amount during PRED enhances OER while decreasing HER activity. Mott-Schottky analysis suggests that the improvement in HER activity by adopting PRED is due to an increase in the reactivity of active sites. In contrast, the increase in OER activity is attributed to an increase in the number of active sites on the surface of NiP films caused by excess dissolution during PRED. Surface analyses indicate that the opposite responses of HER and OER are caused by different factors; the uniform formation of NiP governs HER activity, while the removability of phosphate determines the exposure of OER-active Ni oxide phases.

Bimetallic NiM/C (M = Cu and Mo) Catalysts for the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction: Deciphering the Role of Unintentional Surface Oxides in the Activity Enhancement

Alexandr G. Oshchepkov et al.

Summary: This study reveals the significant influence of unintentional surface oxides in nickel-based materials on electrocatalytic reactions, particularly the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity. These findings highlight the importance of excluding the effects of surface oxides when evaluating the activity of nickel-based catalysts, in order to accurately interpret the impact of other factors.

Impact of Cathodic Potential on the Growth Mechanisms and Morphology of Ni-P Alloys Using Electrodeposition Technique

C. Benyekken et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electrodeposition process of phosphorus nickel alloy prepared and deposited on a copper substrate at room temperature in a sulphate bath using chronoamperometry technique. X-ray microanalysis and chronoamperograms analysis revealed a decrease in phosphorus content with increasing cathodic potential, and the nucleation process was found to be instantaneous and controlled by kinetics. X-ray diffraction analysis showed an amorphous structure, while SEM images displayed a smooth appearance with the presence of pores.

Eduardo B. Ferreira et al.

Summary: This article contributes to the understanding of interfacial electrochemical phenomena occurring at polycrystalline Ni electrodes by analyzing the electrochemical reduction of beta-Ni(OH)(2). Contrary to existing beliefs, the electrochemical reduction of beta-Ni(OH)(2) to metallic Ni was achieved, leading to potential implications for alkaline electrochemical energy technologies. The study also points to the regeneration of a metallic Ni surface and updates the Bode diagram accordingly.
