Slow soil enzyme recovery following invasive tree removal through gradual changes in bacterial and fungal communities

S. J. Sapsford et al.

Summary: Biological invasions of plants have significant effects on ecosystem functioning by altering soil microbiota. This study investigated the recovery of soil enzymatic function following the removal of invasive Pinus spp. in New Zealand. The results showed that soil enzymatic activities were influenced by pine legacies through changes in soil properties and biotic communities. The slow recovery of enzymatic function may have implications for plant establishment and ecosystem restoration.

Pine invasion drives loss of soil fungal diversity

S. J. Sapsford et al.

Summary: Plant invasions can lead to a loss of biodiversity in invaded ecosystems, with pine invasion causing a decrease in soil fungal diversity. The study shows that as pine density increases, there is a shift in fungal community structure and a significant loss of fungal diversity across all scales.

Applying ecological research to improve long-term outcomes of wilding conifer management

Ian A. Dickie et al.

Summary: The removal of wilding conifers has become a major conservation focus in New Zealand. Short-term management activities may not achieve desired long-term outcomes, so greater integration of ecological research with management is needed. Understanding the impacts and legacies of wilding conifers over time is crucial for successful transition to different land uses.

Effect of soil carbon amendments in reversing the legacy effect of plant invasion

Ziliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Invasive plants alter soil characteristics through plant-soil feedbacks, inhibiting the return of native species. Soil carbon amendments have the potential to reduce the impact of polyphenols, promoting the growth of native plants and reversing the legacy effects of invasive species.

Linking Genes to Traits in Fungi

A. L. Romero-Olivares et al.

Summary: Fungi play a crucial role in the nitrogen and carbon cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. By examining gene frequencies related to nitrogen uptake and organic matter decomposition in fungi, researchers can gain insights into the mechanisms driving fungal ecological processes. The study found that gene frequencies vary across different trait-based categories of fungi and can help predict how fungi respond to environmental stress. Additionally, comparing gene frequencies of different types of fungi revealed potential evolutionary trajectories of life history traits in fungi.

Plant community legacy effects on nutrient cycling, fungal decomposer communities and decomposition in a temperate grassland

Renske Jongen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the plant species-specific microbial communities as mediators of soil legacies, finding that soil legacy effects on decomposition and soil decomposer community composition were most evident shortly after the start of the feedback phase, but disappeared after the establishment of a new plant community. Soil conditioning time and years since disturbance consistently affected soil functions, with no strong effects observed from plant functional group and growth strategy. Recovery time, rather than soil legacy effects, was identified as the most important factor driving soil functions after disturbance.
