Explaining variation in plant-herbivore associational effects in a tree biodiversity experiment

Samuel J. Leonard et al.

Summary: Within biodiversity-ecosystem function research, this study provides a framework for explaining variation in plant-herbivore associational effects, particularly when generalist herbivores cause most damage. The study shows that monoculture herbivory levels of focal species and their neighbors can predict the direction and strength of associational effects. The results suggest that spatial organization modifies biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships when associational effects operate.

Partitioning the effects of plant diversity on ecosystem functions at different trophic levels

Seraina L. Cappelli et al.

Summary: This study calculated and analyzed the diversity effects on three functions (aboveground biomass, insect herbivory, and pathogen infection) in a grassland experiment. The results showed that complementarity effects were generally positive while selection effects were generally negative. Different species had different effects on different functions. Diversity effects were less pronounced for herbivory.

Nutrient status not secondary metabolites drives herbivory and pathogen infestation across differently mycorrhized tree monocultures and mixtures

Olga Ferlian et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that tree species identity and mycorrhizal type significantly affect leaf herbivory and pathogen infestation, while tree species and mycorrhizal richness do not. Elemental concentrations determine herbivory and pathogen infestation, indicating that the chemical defence strategies investigated may not be involved in the effects found in our study with tree saplings.
