Temporal and spatial niche complementarity in sunflower pollinator communities and pollination function

Carlos Zaragoza-Trello et al.

Summary: By comparing pollination activity at the edge and centre of crop fields and over the day, we found that spatial and temporal niche complementarity significantly influences sunflower crop production. Only the visitation rate of hoverflies slightly differed between the centre and the edge of the fields, but plants pollinated only by small-sized pollinators experienced a decline in seed production with distance from the edge. Different pollinator species showed complementary peak activity periods throughout the day, and plants pollinated only in the morning or afternoon had higher seed weights.

The importance of multi- year studies and commercial yield metrics in measuring pollinator dependence ratios: A case in UK Rubus idaeus L.

Imogen C. Ryan et al.

Summary: The benefit of pollinators to crop production is quantified using pollinator dependence ratios, which can vary considerably for a single crop, creating uncertainty in economic valuations. This study measured the pollinator dependence ratio of two raspberry cultivars over three years and found that it was highly sensitive to the choice of yield metric, interannual variation, and cultivar. Imposing quality criteria for commercial value significantly increased the pollinator dependence ratio and economic valuations of pollination services. It is recommended to conduct pollinator exclusion studies over multiple years and use yield metrics linked to actual market values for accurate estimations of pollinator dependence ratios.

Portfolio effect and asynchrony as drivers of stability in plant-pollinator communities along a gradient of landscape heterogeneity

Amparo Lazaro et al.

Summary: Understanding how pollination services can be maintained in increasingly anthropogenic landscapes is a current challenge for basic and applied ecology. This study assessed the relationships between within-year stability and its drivers, and between the drivers of stability, landscape heterogeneity, and species diversity in the Mediterranean communities. The results suggest that preserving diverse communities within the heterogeneous Mediterranean landscapes may help maintain the stability of pollination services, both through effects on synchrony and the portfolio effect.

Biodiversity promotes ecosystem functioning despite environmental change

Pubin Hong et al.

Summary: The research shows that biodiversity has a positive impact on ecosystem functioning, especially in high-stress environments affected by global environmental change factors. This positive impact is mainly driven by interspecific complementarity and increases over time.

Insect pollination enhances yield stability in two pollinator-dependent crops

Pablo L. Hunicken et al.

Summary: The research suggests that fruit set of pear and apple crops are significantly influenced by the visitation rate of pollinators, with pollinator exclusion leading to a substantial decrease in fruit set and an increase in spatial and temporal variability. Apple trees receive one order of magnitude more visits per flower than pear trees, indicating that in this system, the pollination service meets the pollination demand of the apple crop.

Temporal stability of biomass in annual plant communities is driven by species diversity and asynchrony, but not dominance

Jaime Kigel et al.

Summary: The study reveals that biomass stability in annual plant communities in the Mediterranean region is higher due to factors such as increased biomass production, species richness, and evenness. Species asynchrony plays a key role in driving stability at the local spatial scale. Biomass production and richness indirectly affect stability through asynchrony, but with different impacts at each site.

Bees increase seed set of wild plants while the proportion of arable land has a variable effect on pollination in European agricultural landscapes

Lina Herbertsson et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing proportion of arable land can affect seed set of insect-pollinated plants, with the impact varying depending on the flower visitation by bees. The effect of arable land on seed set and flower visitation by bees varies across studies.

Consistently positive effect of species diversity on ecosystem, but not population, temporal stability

Qianna Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that species diversity can enhance ecosystem-level temporal stability, regardless of the system being terrestrial or aquatic. Increasing diversity promotes asynchrony, which in turn increases ecosystem stability. However, species diversity tends to reduce population temporal stability in terrestrial systems while increasing it in aquatic systems.

Wild insect diversity increases inter-annual stability in global crop pollinator communities

Deepa Senapathi et al.

Summary: The study found that higher pollinator diversity contributes to greater inter-annual stability in pollinator communities; temporal variation in pollinator abundance is primarily driven by the three-most dominant species; crops in tropical regions demonstrate higher inter-annual variability in pollinator species richness compared to crops in temperate regions.
