Treatment of cracked teeth: A comprehensive narrative review

Angeliki Kakka et al.

Summary: There is still no consensus in the literature regarding the restorative and endodontic management of cracked teeth. Cracked teeth with normal pulp or reversible pulpitis have shown high pulp and tooth survival rates with direct or indirect composite restorations. Recent data suggest that monitoring cracked teeth, especially in the absence of symptoms or compromised tooth structure, is a favorable approach.

Recent Advances in the Diagnosis of Enamel Cracks: A Narrative Review

Bassam Zidane

Summary: Cracked teeth can be difficult to diagnose as they can mimic other conditions. Their causes include physiological stress, trauma, and other factors. Traditional and modern methods, such as transillumination and optical coherence tomography, can be used for diagnosis. Symptoms and signs reported by patients may vary depending on the location and extension of the crack.

Effect of food hardness on chewing behavior in children

Nabeel Almotairy et al.

Summary: The study found that children as young as 3 years old are capable of performing basic chewing functions similar to adults, but there are differences in the anticipation or adaptation of jaw muscle activity and jaw movements to food hardness. By the late permanent dentition stage (15-17 years), children are able to exhibit adult-like chewing behavior.

Survival and prognostic factors of managing cracked teeth with reversible pulpitis: A 1-to 4-year prospective cohort study

Junghoon Lee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical performance of managing cracked teeth with reversible pulpitis through a combination of internal and external splinting. Bidirectional splinting successfully treated cracked teeth with reversible pulpitis, with pain on percussion being an important factor in deciding whether to attempt root canal treatment on symptomatic cracked teeth. A step-by-step approach with bidirectional crack splinting should be encouraged for cracked teeth with vital pulp without mechanical allodynia instead of preemptive root canal treatment.

Survival rate after endodontic treatment in general dentistry for cracked teeth with different coronal restorations

Winnie Nguyen Thi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the survival rate of cracked teeth after endodontic treatment, comparing composite filling/crown and full crown restorations. The overall survival rate for cracked teeth was 68% after 5 years, indicating that cracked teeth restored with a full crown had a significantly higher survival rate of 97%. The results suggest that cracked teeth should be restored with a full crown after endodontic treatment.
