Teledentistry in the Management of Patients with Dental and Temporomandibular Disorders

Giuseppe Minervini et al.

Summary: Telemedicine in dentistry uses telecommunication technology to exchange clinical information and images over remote distances. It offers an opportunity to continue dental practice during the COVID-19 pandemic and has several subunits such as teleconsultation and telediagnosis. However, there are challenges related to reimbursement, costs, regulations, physical examinations, and equipment.

Prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ligia Figueiredo Valesan et al.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population. The overall prevalence of TMJD was approximately 31% for adults/elderly and 11% for children/adolescents, with the most prevalent TMJD being disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). Knowledge about the frequency of TMJD can encourage dentists to consider appropriate strategies for early and correct diagnosis and management.

Teleconsultation and telediagnosis were the most reported applications, with policy-level factors such as data privacy issues and regulations, community-level factors like availability of resources and support, and organizational-level factors like familiar care settings and effective administration playing important roles in the adoption of teledentistry among older adults.

One year into the COVID-19 pandemic - temporomandibular disorders and bruxism: What we have learned and what we can do to improve our manner of treatment

Alona Emodi-Perlman et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted routine dental services, with many oral health issues such as TMD and bruxism not being considered emergencies, leaving patients without proper treatment. Studies suggest that the pandemic's impact on subjects' psychological states may worsen orofacial pain, but remote teledentistry and consultations can offer some relief for chronic pain patients during this time. Consideration of legal and ethical issues is crucial when using remote methods for diagnosing and treating chronic orofacial pain patients.
