Identification of a Biomarker Panel for Diagnosis of Early Childhood Caries Using Salivary Metabolic Profile

Summary: Several studies have shown that nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolic profiles can differentiate patients with caries from healthy individuals. This study aimed to identify a salivary metabolite biomarker panel for early childhood caries (ECC). Saliva samples from children with and without caries were analyzed using NMR spectroscopy, and specific metabolites were identified that could detect ECC. An optimal biomarker panel comprising formate, lactate, proline, and glycine was developed, which showed improved diagnostic performance for ECC compared to a single metabolite.

HMDB 5.0: the Human Metabolome Database for 2022

Summary: The Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) has been providing comprehensive information about human metabolites since 2007, and has undergone significant improvements and upgrades in its latest update, HMDB 5.0. These improvements include an increase in the number of metabolite entries, enhancements to metabolite descriptions, new visualization tools, and more accurately predicted spectral data sets. These upgrades are aimed at improving the usability and potential applications of the HMDB in various fields, including human metabolomics, exposomics, lipidomics, nutritional science, biochemistry, and clinical chemistry.

Metabolic differences of the oral microbiome related to dental caries - A pilot study

Summary: This study investigated the composition and functions discrepancy of supragingival plaque associated with active deciduous teeth caries in mixed dentitions. The results showed no significant differences in microbiome composition between caries and caries-free groups, but metabolome analysis identified glucose metabolism and oxidative stress as related to dental caries in mixed dentitions.

Understanding dental caries as a non-communicable and behavioral disease: Management implications

Summary: This article reviews the paradigm shift in the conceptualization of caries as a non-communicable disease and discusses its appropriate management. Dental caries has transitioned from being considered as a communicable and infectious disease to an ecological and non-communicable disease, closely related to behavior and lifestyle. Environmental factors, such as the frequent intake of sugars, disrupt the symbiosis of the dental biofilm, leading to the initiation and progression of caries lesions. As an NCD, dental caries shares similarities with other non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes.
