Method for the seismic performance evaluation of fasteners used for securing cultural artifacts

Weiguo Yang et al.

Summary: Earthquakes can cause damage to museum structures and cultural artifacts, but there is a lack of seismic risk assessment for museum collections. This study proposes an analysis method for the museum-showcase-artifact system and a seismic fragility analysis method for cultural artifacts. It also presents a method to evaluate the seismic performance of fasteners. Through finite element analysis, the proposed evaluation method is explained, verified, and analyzed for various factors. The study concludes that the evaluation method provides a scientific basis for selecting fasteners for cultural artifacts.

Seismic overturning fragility analysis for freestanding building contents subjected to horizontal bidirectional floor motions

Pei Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the rocking response of freestanding 3-D rectangular blocks subjected to seismic excitations and proposes a method for evaluating their overturning fragility. The study shows that the blocks are more vulnerable to overturning under bidirectional excitations compared to unidirectional excitations, and blocks on higher floors are more prone to overturning.

Shaking Table Seismic Experimental Investigation of Lightweight Rigid Bodies

Giuseppe Cocuzza Avellino et al.

Summary: This study presents the findings of an extensive shaking table experimental campaign conducted on nine free-standing wooden specimens. The study aims to provide insights on the rigid body motion of free-standing objects. The results suggest that impairments in base surface and shapes of the specimens lead to asymmetric responses. The study also discusses the damping properties and highlights the limitations of the ideal simple rigid model.

A procedure for the seismic risk assessment of the cultural heritage

Mariella Diaferio et al.

Summary: The paper discusses a procedure for evaluating seismic risk on historic and/or cultural structures, utilizing additional economic parameters to consider the unique aspects of these buildings. The current approach, regulated by Italian codes and calibrated for residential buildings, is deemed inadequate for analyzing cultural buildings, highlighting the need for a specific and in-depth analysis.

Towards a reliable seismic assessment of rocking components

Danilo D'Angela et al.

Summary: The paper explores the reliability of existing shake table testing protocols for assessing the seismic response of freestanding rigid components, highlighting the need to correlate rigid block motion with input features. The study uses numerical analysis to evaluate the dynamic response of unanchored components subjected to base acceleration inputs, ultimately providing recommendations for a reliable assessment of rocking components.

Seismic damage assessment of unanchored nonstructural components taking into account the building response

Danilo D'Angela et al.

Summary: This study extended the seismic damage assessment of unanchored nonstructural components using rigid block analysis, and found that floor motions are more severe than ground motions. It developed a performance-based methodology for damage analysis and provided insights into the seismic performance of rocking components.
