Hygromechanical behaviour of wooden panel paintings: classification of their deformation tendencies based on numerical modelling and experimental results

Lorenzo Riparbelli et al.

Summary: Wooden panel paintings, as important historical and artistic artworks, pose a challenge for conservators and scientists due to their complex conservation issues. This paper describes the deformation tendencies of selected panel paintings, based on tests carried out on real panel paintings representing different periods and construction techniques. The study identifies three important variables: tree ring orientation of the wooden support, stiffness, and emissivity of the paint layers.

Numerical modelling of climate-induced fracture and deformation in wood: Application to historical museum objects

R. A. Luimes et al.

Summary: Damage in oak wood museum objects under indoor climate variations, particularly relative humidity changes, is studied through a thermo-hygro-mechanical model. Results show that deformation and fracture caused by thermal variations are minor compared to those caused by relative humidity variations. Additionally, the susceptibility to fracture in oak wood increases with age and is influenced by the initial moisture content.
