Chemo-mechanical model for degradation of oil paintings by amorphous and crystalline metal soaps

G. J. A. M. Eumelen et al.

Summary: Metal soap formation is a critical degradation mechanism in historical oil paintings, which can lead to mechanical damage such as cracking and delamination. This paper proposes a chemo-mechanical model to predict metal soap formation and its consequent mechanical damage, and the model is validated using experimental data.

Micro to Nano: Multiscale IR Analyses Reveal Zinc Soap Heterogeneity in a 19th-Century Painting by Corot

Xiao Ma et al.

Summary: Formation and aggregation of metal carboxylates can degrade oil paintings. The limited spatial resolution of traditional methods hampers the understanding of the formation of metal soaps. In this study, two novel methods with higher spatial resolution were used to investigate the distribution of chemical phases in a 19th-century painting. The newly accessible nanocompositional information will advance the knowledge of chemical processes in oil paint and stimulate new art conservation practices.

New insight on spatial localization and microstructures of calcite-aragonite interfaces in adult shell of Haliotis tuberculata: Investigations of wild and farmed abalones by FTIR and Raman mapping

Aicha Badou et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the shell microstructures of European abalone and identifies the spatial distribution of calcite and aragonite phases. Calcite is found in 100% of both farmed and wild shells, and is located systematically in the spherulitic layer without direct contact with the nacreous layer. A model is proposed to explain the hierarchical arrangement of different phases of calcium carbonate.

Quantitative GC-MS Analysis of Artificially Aged Paints with Variable Pigment and Linseed Oil Ratios

Eliise Tammekivi et al.

Summary: The pigment concentration significantly influences the drying process of oil paints. The commonly used P/S ratio varies greatly even with the same linseed oil in paints. Pigment concentration needs to be considered as another factor when characterising oil-based paint samples based on the lipid profile.

A Critical Review on the Analysis of Metal Soaps in Oil Paintings

Francesca Caterina Izzo et al.

Summary: Up to 70% of oil paintings in collections exhibit metal soaps, which result from chemical reactions between metal ions in paint layers and fatty acids in binders. Conservation professionals need to carefully assess the implications of metal soaps and utilize various analytical techniques to detect and address this common issue.

The kinetics of metal soap crystallization in oil polymers

Joen Hermans et al.

Summary: The crystallization of metal soaps in oil paint affects the appearance and structural stability of artworks, and understanding the structural transitions and kinetics during this process can support conservation decisions. Research showed that zinc soap crystallization is influenced by oil matrix properties, forming crystalline polymorphs in varying ratios with two-stage kinetics, while lead soap crystallization is fast but leads to increasing disorder with matrix polymerization. Results provide fundamental insight and foundations for improved risk assessment during conservation treatment of oil paintings.

Insight into the effects of moisture and layer build-up on the formation of lead soaps using micro-ATR-FTIR spectroscopic imaging of complex painted stratigraphies

Elena Possenti et al.

Summary: Metal soaps are formed in paint layers through the reaction of metal ions of pigments and fatty acids of organic binders. This study used micro-ATR-FTIR spectroscopic imaging to analyze the formation of lead soaps in oil-based paint layers in relation to moisture sources. The research provided insights into the different lead white pigments, organic materials, and lead soaps present in authentic samples with complex stratigraphies.
