Superradiant axion clouds around asteroid-mass primordial black holes

Nuno P. Branco et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the dynamics and observational signatures of axion clouds formed via the superradiant instability around primordial black holes. The research shows that a large number of superradiant axions become free of the black hole's gravitational potential and accumulate in the intergalactic medium or even in the host galaxy. The contribution of these axions to the galactic and extragalactic background flux is already beyond current observational limits, excluding a large range of parameters.

Seeking dark matter with γ-ray attenuation

Jose Luis Bernal et al.

Summary: The analysis shows that gamma-ray measurements indicate an excess optical depth compared to expectations from galaxies. This excess is favored over the null hypothesis at a significant level, when modeled as an overall increase in extragalactic background light (EBL). If the excess is instead modeled as a two-photon decay of a dark-matter axion, it is still favored over the null hypothesis but at a slightly lower confidence level. The analysis also sets strong constraints on the photon-axion coupling within a specific mass range.

Probing the blue axion with cosmic optical background anisotropies

Pierluca Carenza et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a radiative decaying big bang relic called blue axion, with a mass range of 5-25 eV, which can be studied through direct and indirect observations of the cosmic optical background (COB). The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) measurements of COB anisotropies at 606 nm provide the strongest constraints on blue-axion cold dark matter. New HST measurements at higher frequencies (336 nm and 438 nm) are suggested to further improve the constraints on the lifetime of blue axions by an order of magnitude, and it is shown that COB anisotropies can also be used to probe thermally produced and hot relic blue axions. The simple interpretation of the excess in the diffuse COB detected by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) as photons produced by decaying hot relic is excluded. Additionally, the potential of upcoming line intensity mapping experiments to detect blue axions with long lifetimes of 1026 s or 1027 s for the cold dark matter and the hot relic cases is discussed.

Strong constraints on decay and annihilation of dark matter from heating of gas-rich dwarf galaxies

Digvijay Wadekar et al.

Summary: Gas-rich dwarf galaxies provide sensitive probes for the properties and decay processes of dark matter. Observations of these galaxies can provide important constraints on the decay lifetime and annihilation of dark matter, contributing to our understanding of dark matter models.

Challenges for heavy QCD axion inflation

Fuminobu Takahashi et al.

Summary: The study explores the possibility of heavy QCD axions inducing slow roll inflation to solve the strong CP problem through the Peccei-Quinn mechanism. It requires fine-tuning between contributions to achieve hilltop inflation, leading to potential challenges in experiments for validation.

Spectral distortion constraints on photon injection from low-mass decaying particles

Boris Bolliet et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background can be used to study particle physics. It calculates the distortion signals from decaying particles converting into photons at different historical epochs, and constraints on the properties of these particles are explored. Future improvements in CMB spectrometers could enhance the constraints obtained, offering an important complementary probe of early-universe particle physics.

Gravitational waves from axionlike particle cosmic string-wall networks

Graciela B. Gelmini et al.

Summary: Axionlike particles (ALPs) are a compelling candidate for dark matter, originating from the formation of a string-wall network. These particles must annihilate into gravitational waves and nonrelativistic ALPs, especially for those with mass ranging from 10(-16) to 10(6) eV. Future cosmological probes may be able to detect these gravitational waves.

Lyman-α constraints on cosmic heating from dark matter annihilation and decay

Hongwan Liu et al.

Summary: We have derived new constraints on models of decaying and annihilating dark matter by ensuring that the energy injected into the intergalactic medium does not overheat it at late times. These constraints, obtained using the DarkHistory code package, are robust to uncertainties in reionization and competitive with other limits on dark matter.
