Semi-analytic model for plasma production and Cherenkov radiation emission from hypervelocity impacts on soda-lime glass

Andrea La Spina et al.

Summary: A semi-analytic method is proposed to calculate the plasma and Cherenkov radiation produced from hypervelocity impacts on soda-lime glass. The method uses blast wave model and Saha equations to estimate the hydrodynamic profiles and ionization state of the target material. The Frank-Tamm formula is employed to study the onset of Cherenkov radiation and compute the emitted energy. The results show that the produced total electric charge is linearly dependent on the projectile density and quadratically dependent on the projectile velocity, while the emitted Cherenkov radiation scales quadratically with the produced charge if the onset conditions are met.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem

Aycil Cesmelioglu et al.

Summary: We present and analyze a strongly conservative hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the coupled incompressible Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition. An a priori error analysis shows that the velocity error does not depend on the pressure, and that velocity and pressure converge with optimal rates. These results are confirmed by numerical examples.

A multilevel block preconditioner for the HDG trace system applied to incompressible resistive MHD

Sriramkrishnan Muralikrishnan et al.

Summary: We present a scalable block preconditioning strategy for the trace system arising from the high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). A block preconditioner is constructed for the trace system, and a system algebraic multigrid (AMG) is used for the remaining unknowns. The choice of smoother in the system AMG part is critical for the convergence and performance of the block preconditioner.

A superconvergent hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for weakly compressible magnetohydrodynamics

Andrea La Spina et al.

Summary: The work proposes a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for weakly compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) problems, demonstrating its superior properties and superconvergence characteristics. Different MHD formulations are discussed, and the convergence properties of the proposed methods under various conditions are extensively examined through numerical examples.

An implicit monolithic AFC stabilization method for the CG finite element discretization of the fully-ionized ideal multifluid electromagnetic plasma system

Michael M. Crockatt et al.

Summary: This study presents an implicit finite element formulation for an ideal fully-ionized multifluid electromagnetic plasma system. The formulation utilizes fully-implicit Runge-Kutta time discretizations and a monolithic discrete algebraic flux corrected continuous Galerkin spatial discretization. The results demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the formulation for smooth and discontinuous solutions to challenging plasma physics problems.

Time- and frequency-domain hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin solvers for the calculation of the Cherenkov radiation

Andrea La Spina et al.

Summary: This work proposes novel hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods, both in the time and in the frequency domain, to accurately compute the Cherenkov radiation emitted by a charged particle travelling in a uniform medium at superluminal speed. The adopted formulations enrich existing HDG approaches for the solution of Maxwell's equations by including perfectly matched layers (PMLs) to effectively absorb the outgoing waves and Floquet-periodic boundary conditions to connect the boundaries of the computational domain in the direction of the moving charge. The proposed methods demonstrate the capability to faithfully reproduce Cherenkovian effects in different conditions and show high accuracy compared to the Frank-Tamm formula.

Hybridisable Discontinuous Galerkin Formulation of Compressible Flows

Jordi Vila-Perez et al.

Summary: This paper presents a review of high-order hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for compressible flows and introduces an original unified framework for the derivation of Riemann solvers in hybridised formulations. HLL and HLLEM Riemann solvers demonstrate superiority in boundary layer approximation and positivity preservation, respectively, while the HDG scheme with artificial viscosity shock treatment technique shows competitiveness with traditional solvers.
