Moments-based interface reconstruction, remap and advection

Mikhail Shashkov et al.

Summary: We propose a new method for moment-of-fluid (MOF2) interface reconstruction, which uses the moments of material fragments in mesh cells to reconstruct convex material polygons or unions of convex polygons. The method only requires information about the material moments in the current cell. The MOF2 method accurately reproduces various convex and concave shapes and can be implemented efficiently in parallel.

High-order methods for diffuse-interface models in compressible multi-medium flows: A review

V. Maltsev et al.

Summary: Diffuse interface models, despite interface smearing issues, provide an efficient and robust framework for simulating multi-species flows. Recent advancements in high-order accuracy schemes have allowed these models to solve discontinuities without introducing numerical instabilities in various numerical frameworks.

A thermal equilibrium approach to modelling multiple solid-fluid interactions with phase transitions, with application to cavitation

Simon D. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new approach to modeling phase transitions in multi-material problems based on the assumption of thermal equilibrium. The method encodes the physics of phase transitions within the equation of state, allowing for the simulation of complex multi-material, multi-physics problems without further complicating the partial evolution equations.

A diffuse interface model of reactive-fluids and solid-dynamics

Tim Wallis et al.

Summary: This article presents a multi-physics methodology for simulating the nonlinear interaction of multi-phase reactive fluids and elastoplastic solids. The governing equations for solid and reactive multiphase fluid mechanics are solved simultaneously on the same computational grid, with interface-steepening technique maintaining sharp interfaces. The implemented algorithms show good agreement with experiments and improved numerical performance compared to existing Eulerian methods.

Summary: The study introduces a new three-dimensional diffuse interface finite volume method for simulating multiple solid and fluid components with large deformations, sliding, and void opening. The method is straightforward to implement, cost-effective, highly parallelisable, and suitable for large-scale simulations of complex materials and physical processes.

A volume-of-fluid reconstruction based interface sharpening algorithm for a reduced equation model of two-material compressible flow

Murray Cutforth et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical method for simulating two-material flows governed by the compressible unsteady Euler equations, using a system of six equations with a pressure relaxation step. The method employs a volume-of-fluid interface tracking method and a robust update procedure to maintain sharp interface and ensure density and internal energy positivity. Numerical results are shown for various test cases, with agreement with theoretical data and good comparison to other methods for sharpening material interfaces in the five-equation model.
