Blast behaviour of precast segmental vs monolithic concrete beams prestressed with unbonded tendons: A numerical investigation

Duong T. Tran et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the response of precast/prefabricated segmental concrete girders/beams to detonations of high explosives. A new and effective method of applying prestressing force in tendons is explored and used. The working mechanisms of these beams in resisting blast loads are comprehensively examined and discussed. The numerical results show that blast-induced damage to the beams is primarily caused by stress wave propagation, plastic hinges, and beam deflection.

Experimental and analytical study of bond between basalt FRP bars and geopolymer concrete

Giulia Trabacchin et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental and analytical study of the bond behavior of basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars in geopolymer concrete (GPC). The research findings suggest that the bond between BFRP bars and GPC relies mainly on mechanical interlocking rather than chemical adhesion. A theoretical model is proposed to describe the local bond-slip relationship and bond interface properties. Additionally, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of bar diameter, embedment length, and elastic modulus on the maximum pull-out load.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of using alternative cementitious constituents on the compressive performance of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) under static and dynamic conditions. The results show that the proposed UHPC mixes with alternative constituents have comparable performance to the reference mix. Moreover, the compressive strength of the alternative mixes is not strain rate sensitive and they have lower embedded CO2 emissions.

Re-evaluation of shear contribution of CFRP and GFRP sheets in concrete beams post-tensioned with unbonded tendons

Dien Vo-Le et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shear behavior and shear contribution of CFRP/GFRP sheets in unbonded post-tensioned concrete (UPC) T-beams through experiments. The results show that CFRP/GFRP sheets increase the shear resistance of UPC beams, although to a lesser extent compared to reinforced concrete (RC) beams. T-beams with harped tendons exhibit lower shear contribution of CFRP/GFRP sheets but show improved ductility and beam deformation. FRP anchorage systems significantly enhance the shear contribution and energy absorption of the FRP sheets.

Thang Do-Dai et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the effect of reinforcement corrosion level on the deformability and flexural strengthening performance of CFRP and BFRP sheets on RC beams. The test results showed that the laminates significantly reduced crack width and improved flexural resistance. The increase in strengthening effectiveness was more pronounced with a higher reinforcement corrosion level.

Influence of various impact scenarios on the dynamic performance of concrete beam-column joints

Huawei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic performances of concrete beam-column joints under different impact loading scenarios. Experimental and numerical simulation results showed the influence of impact contact conditions, impact location, and impact loading pattern on the joint's behavior. The results indicated that using a rubber pad for softer contact reduced the force peak but resulted in more flexural concrete cracks on the beam.

Numerical evaluation of the impact performance of precast concrete segmental columns and strengthening techniques

Shuyou Xue et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of impact locations and the effectiveness of different strengthening techniques on the performance of precast concrete segmental columns (PCSC) under lateral impacts. SMA ED bars are found to reduce residual displacement effectively, while mild steel ED bars have better energy absorption ability. The response of PCSC is impact location dependent, and different strengthening approaches are needed for segmental and joint impacts.

Numerical investigation of flexural behaviours of precast segmental concrete beams internally post-tensioned with unbonded FRP tendons under monotonic loading

Duong T. Tran et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the potential of using FRP tendons instead of steel tendons in precast structures to mitigate corrosion damage, providing insights into the flexural behavior of beams. Results show that commonly available CFRP tendons can effectively replace steel tendons. Additionally, a new bond reduction factor for predicting the ultimate stress of FRP tendons in PSCBs was proposed as a part of the study.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the performance of GPC beams reinforced with BFRP bars, with results indicating that spiral stirrups outperformed conventional rectangular stirrups under impact loads. By modifying test data and developing numerical models, a GPC material model was established to study the influences of various factors on beam performance. Implications of using steel bars as compression reinforcements were also identified for better performance under impact loads.

Impact response of fibre reinforced geopolymer concrete beams with BFRP bars and stirrups

Tung T. Tran et al.

Summary: The study shows that adding fibers can reduce damages in geopolymer concrete structures under impact and change the failure mode of the beams; however, the effects on impact force, reaction forces, and mid span displacement are minimal. Beams with higher fiber dosage have lower residual strength, contrary to the expected performance observed in fiber reinforced concrete beams under static load.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior and failure modes of PSRC piers under close-in blast loading through reduced-scale field tests. The results showed that PSRC piers exhibited specific failure characteristics compared to monolithic piers under different explosion conditions. It was found that by designing structural parameters such as the number of segments, slenderness ratio, and shear key, the localized and overall residual deformation of PSRC piers could be reduced effectively.

Summary: This study determined the development lengths of different diameter BFRP deformed bars through a series of tests, revealing that as concrete strength increased, the development length decreased, while the average bond strength increased. The current design guidelines significantly overestimated the development lengths of small-diameter bars, and alternative equations were proposed for more accurate predictions.

Distinguished bond behaviour of CFRP sheets in unbonded post-tensioned reinforced concrete beams versus single-lap shear tests

Phuong Phan-Vu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the difference in interfacial bond behavior between CFRP sheets and concrete blocks in single-lap shear tests compared to CFRP sheets and concrete beams. The experimental results show significant differences in debonding strain and strain distribution of CFRP sheets between the different test setups, with strengthened UPC beams exhibiting higher debonding strain than single-lap shear tests. The use of CFRP U-wraps anchors greatly enhances debonding strain in the beams. Additionally, existing codes and models for estimating bond strength of CFRP-to-concrete joints in UPC beams are evaluated.
