Experimental, analytical, and numerical investigations on bond behaviour of basalt TRM systems

Eloisa Fazzi et al.

Summary: This study investigates a composite system designed for the reinforcement of masonry structures, consisting of a basalt-fibre mesh and a lime-based mortar matrix. Two types of basalt-fibre mesh textiles, with different reinforcement effectiveness due to varying yarn spacing, were considered. The performance of the composite system was evaluated through single-lap shear tests on bricks. Analytical and numerical models were developed to simulate the bond behavior of the composite system, and the results were compared to experimental data.

Formulation of a truss element for modelling the tensile response of FRCM strips

Giovanni Minafo et al.

Summary: The complex mechanics of Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) materials make it difficult to model their tensile behavior accurately. After matrix cracking, the fiber-matrix compatibility is lost and the system behaves as two separate elements connected by a brittle interface. Computational approaches, such as brick-based 3D Finite Element Models (FEM), have been proposed to evaluate the tensile behavior of FRCM composites. A simplified coupled truss element has been formulated in this study for modeling the tensile behavior of FRCM composites, showing promise in terms of reliability and computational efficiency.

A tension stiffening model for FRCM reinforcements calibrated by means of an extended database

Francesca Nerilli et al.

Summary: In this study, the tensile performance of FRCM composites as a structural retrofitting technique is analyzed through an extensive database of experimental results. The mechanical and geometrical parameters of the constituents are found to influence the tensile response of the FRCM reinforcement. An analytical provisional formulation is proposed to reproduce the stress-strain behavior of FRCMs based on the mechanical and geometrical features of the constituents.

Modeling the behavior of externally bonded reinforcement using a rigid-trilinear cohesive material law

Veronica Bertolli et al.

Summary: Externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) is an effective method for strengthening and retrofitting existing structures, and fiber-reinforced composites are widely used in the construction industry due to their high strength and durability. Bond tests are commonly used to study the stress transfer mechanism between the composite and the substrate, and derive the cohesive material law (CML) at the interface. This paper proposes a rigid-trilinear CML to describe the stress-transfer mechanism of externally bonded composites with frictional stresses. The proposed CML is validated by comparing analytical solutions with experimental results from direct shear tests.

Tensile Testing of FRCM Coupons for Material Characterization: Discussion of Critical Aspects

Francesco Focacci et al.

Summary: Tensile tests on fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) samples are used to evaluate mechanical properties, while bond tests are used to characterize interfacial properties and identify the debonding interface. An analytical model is used to predict the results of tensile tests based on cohesive material law obtained from bond tests. This paper highlights critical aspects of the clevis-grip tensile test using the same model and shows that grip length, specimen length, and gauge length have a significant influence on the test results. It also points out that the tensile test is a bond test and can be used to determine bond capacity rather than unique tensile properties.

Open issues on the investigation of PBO FRCM-Concrete debonding

Christian Carloni et al.

Summary: This paper addresses open issues regarding the bond behavior of fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites applied to concrete substrates. It focuses on the number of fiber layers' effect on peak load, the loading rate's effect on load response, the relationship between peak load and bonded length, and the information gained from measuring slip at the free end of the bonded composite.

Tensile Tests of FRCM Coupons: The Influence of the Fiber-Matrix Bond Properties

Francesco Focacci et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites are mechanically characterized by tensile and bond tests. The load responses in tensile tests consist of uncracked, cracking, and fully cracked phases. The bond behavior is investigated using single-lap shear test setups. The authors introduced a calibrated cohesive material law (CML) in an analytical model to predict the cracking process accurately.

Investigation of the bond behavior of the fiber reinforced composite-concrete interface using the finite difference method (FDM)

Xingxing Zou et al.

Summary: This study presents a versatile finite difference method (FDM) solution to predict the full-range bond behavior of composite-concrete interface. The research shows that under different bond-slip relationships, the load responses may be similar but the effective bond lengths could vary. Furthermore, adopting different bond-slip relationships with the same fracture energy may lead to variations in peak load for composite-concrete joints with finite bonded length.

Effects of different grips and surface treatments of textile on measured direct tensile response of textile reinforced cementitious composites

Van Doan Truong et al.

Summary: The tensile stress versus strain behavior of textile reinforced cementitious composites is significantly influenced by different grips and textile surface treatments, affecting the interfacial bond between fibers and matrix. Glass TRCCs generally exhibit trilinear tensile behavior, while carbon TRCCs display bilinear behavior. The bolted-clamping grip generally provides higher tensile resistance, especially for carbon TRCCs.

Analytical modelling bond behaviour of polybenzoxazole (PBO) and glass Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) systems coupled with cement and gypsum matrixes: Effect of the Cohesive Material Law (CML) shape

Misseri Giulia et al.

Summary: In this study, four laws with frictional plateaus were selected to analyze fibre-matrix interface behavior in different FRCM systems. Local slip laws for different CMLs were derived for short and long bonded lengths, and adhesion tests were conducted on PBO-cement and glass-gypsum systems. The results showed that different CMLs had varying effectiveness in representing bonding behavior in different systems.

Nonlocal damage and interface modeling approach for the micro-scale analysis of FRCM

Francesca Nerilli et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical response of Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) material, using a nonlocal damage constitutive law for mortar and suitable interfaces to account for fiber-matrix decohesion. By implementing a finite element analysis method, the tensile and shear response of FRCM is studied, highlighting the importance of damage and plasticity in compression. The influence of confinement on the shear response of FRCM is also examined.

Reliability of Different Test Setups and Influence of Mortar Mixture on the Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix-to-Brick Bond Response

Valerio Alecci et al.

Summary: This article presents the results of four different bond tests conducted on specimens made of bricks and fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composite strips. The study revealed variations in bond behavior of the FRCM composites with different inorganic matrices, with commercial matrix composites showing the best tensile strength utilization, while cement-lime mortar composites exhibited the worst bond behavior. The single shear test was found to be the most effective method for evaluating the actual bond performances of FRCM composites.

Effect of fiber-to-matrix bond on the performance of inorganic matrix composites

Summary: This study investigated the efficiency of FRCM in strengthening masonry structures, analyzing the impact of mechanical properties of fibers and matrix as well as potential geometrical defects. Numerical simulations were conducted to simulate bond tests on typical PBO-FRCM and Glass-FRCM, showing slips and stresses in different defects due to application issues. The approach can be applied to optimize the FRCM system by varying mechanical properties of the materials or changing the type of materials.
