An entorhinal-like region in food-caching birds

Marissa C. Applegate et al.

Summary: The hippocampus in birds, despite their lack of an obvious entorhinal cortex, shows functional similarity to mammalian hippocampus. Studying the extrinsic hippocampal connections in chickadees, researchers discovered a structure similar to the entorhinal cortex, which exhibited entorhinal-like cellular activity. This suggests that the entorhinal cortex plays an important role in hippocampal function, even in species without a layered cortex.

Neuronal circuits within the homing pigeon hippocampal formation

Noemi Rook et al.

Summary: The current study aimed to reveal detailed patterns of intrahippocampal connectivity in homing pigeons. Both in vivo and high-resolution in vitro tracing techniques were employed, and a complex connectivity pattern along the subdivisions of the avian hippocampus was uncovered. The segregation along the transverse axis was further supported by expression patterns of the glial fibrillary acidic protein and calbindin.

The medial pallium and the spatial encoding of geometric and visual cues in the terrestrial toad, Rhinella arenarum

Maria Ines Sotelo et al.

Summary: The study found that the amphibian medial pallium plays a role in using environmental geometric features to locate a goal, consistent with evidence from other vertebrate groups. However, damage to the medial pallium also resulted in the toads' inability to locate the goal based on visual feature cues.

Two septal-entorhinal GABAergic projections differentially control coding properties of spatially tuned neurons in the medial entorhinal cortex

Magdalene Isabell Schlesiger et al.

Summary: The study reveals that septal PV+ and CB+ projections have differential effects on neuronal activity in the MEC, with PV+ projections disrupting theta-rhythmic firing and CB+ projections increasing burst firing of grid cells. Inactivation of PV+ or CB+ neurons affects context, reference, and working memory to varying degrees.

Summary: The study shows that the neural circuit mechanisms in the hippocampus are similar between birds and mammals, but the resulting patterns of activity may vary quantitatively according to species-specific ethological needs.

Unihemispheric Evidence Accumulation in Pigeons

Neslihan Wittek et al.

Summary: The study suggests that perceptual decision making in pigeons exhibits behavioral and computational dynamics comparable to mammals and rodents, indicating a core cognitive process shared by both birds and mammals. Additionally, the research revealed that avian hemispheres initiate independent sensory accumulation processes without significant interhemispheric exchange, potentially due to their lack of major connections between hemispheres.
