Two-step nitrogen and sulfur doping in porous carbon dodecahedra for Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors with long term stability

Ying Yang et al.

Summary: Aqueous Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) have the potential to be highly efficient energy storage devices due to their high theoretical capacity, low cost, and intrinsic safety. However, the lack of efficient cathode materials for reversible insertion/extraction of Zn2+ ions has posed a significant challenge to achieving high cycling-stability ZHSCs. In this study, researchers developed a facile two-step doping strategy to synthesize N, S-codoped porous carbon dodecahedra (N, S-PCD) as a high-performance cathode material for ultralong-life aqueous ZHSC. The N, S-PCD cathode demonstrated a specific capacity of 133.4 mA h-1 (300.2 F g-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) and a maximum energy density of 106.7 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 160 W kg-1. Furthermore, the ZHSC showed an ultra-long cycle life, retaining 97.1% capacity after 100,000 charge-discharge cycles (approximately 3960 hours), which is the longest lifespan reported for ZHSCs to date. Mechanism studies revealed that the dual-doping of N and S enhanced the chemical adsorption of Zn2+ ions and improved electronic conductivity, synergistically enhancing the Zn-ion storage performance.

Engineering Pore Nanostructure of Carbon Cathodes for Zinc Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Wenbin Jian et al.

Summary: Zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHCs) have great potential for energy storage applications due to their high power density and energy density. However, the large radius of hydrated Zn2+ ions hinders their efficient storage in micropores with limited sizes, resulting in limited specific capacitance and rate capability of ZIHCs. Therefore, understanding the extent to which pore size influences the storage of hydrated Zn2+ ions in small pores is crucial.

Synchronously manipulating Zn2+ transfer and hydrogen/oxygen evolution kinetics in MXene host electrodes toward symmetric Zn-ions micro-supercapacitor with enhanced areal energy density

Summary: The study presents a strategy to enhance Zn2+ diffusion and suppress hydrogen/oxygen evolution simultaneously within MXene host electrodes for high-energy-density symmetric ZMSCs. The designed MXene/BCF hybrid films effectively reduce Zn2+ diffusion barrier and induce additional pseudocapacitance, resulting in superior areal capacitance in ZMSCs. The use of a doubled voltage window in combination with suppressed kinetics of hydrogen/oxygen evolution leads to a significantly increased areal energy density compared to conventional electrolytes.
