Pathways of Membrane Solubilization: A Structural Study of Model Lipid Vesicles Exposed to Classical Detergents

Victoria Ariel Bjornestad et al.

Summary: Understanding the solubilization pathways of lipid membranes is crucial for their applications in biotechnology and industry. This study investigated the structures and kinetics of lipid/detergent aggregates under various conditions using small-angle X-ray scattering and stopped-flow technique. The findings revealed temperature-dependent effects of different detergents on the solubilization process.

Performance of the time-resolved ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering beamline with the Extremely Brilliant Source

Theyencheri Narayanan et al.

Summary: This article describes the new technical features and enhanced performance of the ID02 beamline with the Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) at the ESRF. The beamline enables static and kinetic investigations of a broad range of systems in different size scales and time ranges. Additionally, it allows for multispeckle X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements and relaxation of collimation conditions, resulting in higher flux throughput and lower background. The article highlights the importance of these developments in enabling structural, dynamic, and kinetic investigations of out-of-equilibrium soft matter and biophysical systems.

Transformation of Lipid Vesicles into Micelles by Adding Nonionic Surfactants: Elucidating the Structural Pathway and the Intermediate Structures

Igor Kevin Mkam Tsengam et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nanostructures formed by the combination of the phospholipid lecithin and the nonionic surfactant Tween 80. The study reveals the formation of disc-like bicelles and cylindrical micelles at specific L/T ratios. The findings suggest that lecithin lipids make up the body of the discs, while Tween 80 surfactants occupy the rims. The research provides insights into the morphological changes in the lecithin-Tween 80 system.

Manipulating Phospholipid Vesicles at the Nanoscale: A Transformation from Unilamellar to Multilamellar by an n-Alkyl-poly(ethylene oxide)

Judith U. De Mel et al.

Summary: Our study showed that an n-alkyl-PEO polymer significantly influences the structure and dynamics of phospholipid vesicles, leading to multilayer formation, size increase, and changes in lipid tail relaxation. This suggests potential applications in controlling membrane properties for technical materials, drug delivery, and nutraceuticals.
