Dual modification of BiVO4 photoanode by enriching bulk and surface oxygen vacancies for enhanced photoelectrochemical performance

Lei Yang et al.

Summary: The introduction of oxygen vacancies (Ov) has been proven efficient in enhancing the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance. In this study, BiVO4 (BVO) photoanodes with both bulk and surface Ov were fabricated and their roles in PEC performance were investigated. The bulk Ov increased carrier density and improved electron-hole separation efficiency, while the surface Ov provided abundant active sites for charge injection. The synergistic effect between the bulk and surface Ov resulted in highly promoted PEC water splitting activity, offering a promising strategy for efficient solar water splitting systems.

Unraveling the Water Oxidation Mechanism on a Stoichiometric and Reduced Rutile TiO2 (100) Surface Using First-Principles Calculations

Anum Shahid Malik et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic water splitting using rutile (100) surfaces as photocatalyst for water oxidation was systematically studied using density functional theory. The highest stability and activity were observed on fully covered (100) surfaces and surfaces with oxygen vacancies in the first two sublayers of the slab. The lowest overpotential for oxygen evolution was found on a reduced rutile (100) surface with a vacancy in the second subsurface oxygen layer, while the oxygen covered surface had a higher overpotential. The rate-limiting step in both cases was the transfer of a proton from a surface adsorbed OH to the electrolyte.

BiVO4 photoelectrodes for unbiased solar water splitting devices enabled by electrodepositing of Cu2O simultaneously as photoanode and photocathode

Lei Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, BiVO4 films were synthesized and Cu2O was electrodeposited to form BiVO4/Cu2O heterojunction electrodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting. By controlling the electrodeposition potential, the semiconductivity behavior of Cu2O on the surface or inside of BiVO4 can be adjusted for different reactions. An optimized BiVO4/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode achieved an anodic photocurrent density of 1.97 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. A reverse arrangement of the BiVO4/Cu2O heterojunction structure was observed when Cu2O was deposited inside BiVO4. The fabricated BiVO4/Cu2O-C photocathode showed a cathodic photocurrent density of -2.9 mA cm-2. A unbiased solar tandem cell was also constructed using BiVO4/Cu2O-C photocathode and BiVO4/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode, which exhibited a photoelectric current of 0.1 mA cm-2 without applying external voltage.

Ni-Doped BiVO4 photoanode for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Meihong Chen et al.

Summary: FeOOH/Ni-BiVO4 photoanode synthesized by a facile wet chemical method shows improved charge transport and separation efficiency. The water oxidation photocurrent density reaches 3.02 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE, and the surface separation efficiency is boosted to 73.3%, about 4 times higher than that of the pure sample. Ni doping promotes hole transport/trapping and introduces more active sites for water oxidation, while FeOOH co-catalyst passivates the Ni-BiVO4 photoanode surface. This work provides a model for the design of BiVO4-based photoanodes with thermodynamic and kinetic advantages.

Recent progress in BiVO4-based heterojunction nanomaterials for photocatalytic applications

Xiaoyan Zhong et al.

Summary: As an innovative semiconductor photocatalytic material, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has gained attention due to its narrow band gap, visible light response, and non-toxicity. However, the photocatalytic properties of BiVO4 are hindered by poor charge transport ability, slow water oxidation kinetics, and fast recombination of electron-hole pairs. This review summarizes the progress in designing heterojunction nano-materials based on BiVO4 for photocatalytic applications, including water splitting, organic matter degradation, CO2 reduction, and heavy metal ion reduction. Future development and prospects of BiVO4-based heterojunction nano-materials are also discussed.
