Design of hydrodechlorination catalysts on the basis of chloromethanes-metallic active sites interactions

A. Arevalo-Bastante et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption of chloromethanes and hydrogen on metal clusters of Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru using molecular simulation. The results showed that dissociative adsorption of chloromethanes is promoted on the zero-valent metal sites while non-dissociative adsorption is favored on the electro-deficient sites. The dechlorination ability followed the order Ru > Rh > Pt > Pd, while hydrogenation ability decreased from Pd and Pt to Rh and Ru. Catalysts with high proportion of zero-valent metal species supported on CeO2-Sm2O3 exhibited outstanding performance in the hydrodechlorination of chloromethanes.

Surface reactions during temperature-programmed desorption and reduction experiments with oxygen-functionalized carbon blacks

Maximilian Goeckeler et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon black was functionalized through gas-phase oxidation using nitric acid vapor at 150 degrees C, and the decomposition mechanisms of oxygen-containing surface groups were analyzed through temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) experiments. The increase in duration of HNO3 functionalization led to an enrichment of acidic surface groups, with desorbed H2O originating from chemisorbed water bound to carboxylic acid groups and condensation reactions of carboxylic acids and phenols. Additionally, the selective reduction of phenols and carbonyls by H2 during TPR resulted in the appearance of a new CO2 evolution peak at 575 degrees C, indicating the hydrolysis of anhydrides and lactones.
