Diffusivities in Binary Mixtures of n-Decane, n-Hexadecane, n-Octacosane, 2-Methylpentane, 2,2-Dimethylbutane, Cyclohexane, Benzene, Ethanol, 1-Decanol, Ethyl Butanoate, or n-Hexanoic Acid with Dissolved He or Kr Close to Infinite Dilution

Frances D. Lenahan et al.

Summary: Diffusive mass transport in binary mixtures of liquid solvent and dissolved helium or krypton close to infinite dilution was investigated through experimental determination of the Fick diffusion coefficient D-11 using dynamic light scattering, and equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were utilized to access solute self-diffusion coefficient D-1. Results show that the molecular characteristics of the solvent influence molecular diffusion, with mixtures containing dissolved helium showing better mass transport efficiency compared to those with krypton.

Extremely Slow Diffusion of Gold Nanoparticles under Confinement in Mesoporous Silica

Ramona Mhanna et al.

Summary: We conducted an X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy study to investigate the mobility of colloidal gold nanoparticles confined within SBA-15 mesoporous silica channels. The nanoparticle dynamics were well described by one-dimensional diffusion at the probed length scales. The diffusion coefficients of the nanoparticles were significantly smaller than those in bulk glycerol, and their variation with temperature followed the expected trend based on the viscosity of glycerol. We explored potential mechanisms that could contribute to this reduction in diffusivity.

Diffusive dynamics of charged nanoparticles in convex lens-induced confinement

Emmanuel Hitimana et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of 36 nm negatively-charged polystyrene particles in convex lens-induced confinement using differential dynamic microscopy and particle tracking. The results show that particle diffusion is hindered with increased confinement and that the ensemble-averaged diffusion coefficient depends on bulk concentration.

Modelling diffusive transport of particles interacting with slit nanopore walls: The case of fullerenes in toluene filled alumina pores

Andreas Baer et al.

Summary: Accurately modeling the diffusion transport of nanoparticles across nanopores is a challenging problem due to the amplification of nanoscopic details and effective interactions at the pore wall. This study proposes a multiscale approach that combines molecular dynamics simulations and a stochastic model to determine the average diffusion constant. The model is applied to the diffusion of fullerenes in a toluene-filled slit nanopore and considers the influence of partial slip at the pore wall.

Classification and characterization of multimodal nanoparticle size distributions by size-exclusion chromatography

Lukas Gromotka et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the application of size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) in the classification and characterization of multimodal distributions of nanoparticles over a broad size range. The study shows that SEC can accurately determine the size distribution of complex nanoparticle dispersions and fractionate mixtures into coarse and fine fractions.

Anomalous nanoparticle surface diffusion in LCTEM is revealed by deep learning-assisted analysis

Vida Jamali et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the motion of gold nanoparticles dispersed in water and found that the motion of the nanoparticles exhibited anomalous diffusive behavior modulated by the electron beam dose rate. The results suggest that the nanoparticle motion is governed by different diffusion behaviors at different dose rates, which can be explained by the presence of surface molecular species.

Particle Size Measurement Using Dynamic Light Scattering at Ultra-Low Concentration Accounting for Particle Number Fluctuations

Mengjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents two methods for addressing the limitations of dynamic light scattering (DLS) at ultra-low particle concentrations, including establishing the relationship between the non-Gaussian ACF and PSD using the kernel function reconstruction (KFR) method and removing the non-Gaussian term through baseline reset (BR) method. However, noise in experimental data limits reliable PSD recovery.

Diffusivities in Binary Mixtures of n-Hexane or 1-Hexanol with Dissolved CH4, Ne, Kr, R143a, SF6, or R236fa Close to Infinite Dilution

Maximilian Piszko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interplay between liquid structure and diffusive mass transport in binary mixtures using dynamic light scattering, Raman spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. The Fick diffusion coefficients increase with temperature and are smaller in mixtures based on 1-hexanol compared to n-hexane.

Investigations on nonlinear optical properties and thermal diffusivity of gold nanoparticle embedded protein complex

Jessy Simon et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the formation of a ground-state complex between gold nanoparticles and proteins can affect the nonlinear optical response of the proteins, thereby influencing the optical limiting threshold. The work also suggests that protein-gold nanoparticle complexes may serve as potential candidates for optical limiting applications. Moreover, the concentration of gold nanoparticles can impact thermal diffusivity, while an increase in protein concentration correlates linearly with thermal diffusivity, potentially for detecting protein concentration in blood samples.

Translational and rotational diffusion coefficients of gold nanorods functionalized with a high molecular weight, thermoresponsive ligand: a depolarized dynamic light scattering study

Deborah Feller et al.

Summary: The rotational and translational diffusion, as well as colloidal stability of nanorods, have been studied with angle-dependent depolarized dynamic light scattering data analysis. It was found that as temperature increases, the ligands of the nanorods collapse, leading to a transition in particle shape.

Channel-length dependence of particle diffusivity in confinement

Soichiro Tottori et al.

Summary: Understanding the diffusive behavior of particles and large molecules in channels is fundamental in biological and synthetic systems. Experimental results show that diffusion coefficients in finite open-ended channels are always higher than predicted by the conventional theoretical model of infinitely long channels. Diffusion coefficients depend not only on the radius ratio, but also on channel length, boundary conditions of neighboring reservoirs, and the compressibility of the medium.
