Thermocapillary-driven coherent structures by low-Stokes-number particles and their morphology in high-aspect-ratio liquid bridges

Summary: Thermocapillary-driven coherent structures by low-Stokes-number particles are investigated experimentally. Coherent structures, which rotate rigidly following the traveling-wave-type convection of mHTW = 1, are successfully realized in a tall or high-aspect-ratio half-zone liquid bridge due to hydrothermal-wave instability. Poincare sections of a single particle forming the coherent structure at different heights are obtained in the rotating frame of reference, and the projected distribution of multiple particles forming the coherent structure is examined for correlation with the Poincare points. The stability of the coherent structures is discussed by tracking particles exhibiting turnover motion in the liquid bridge.

Through numerical simulations and ground experiments, the reproduction of oscillatory flows with 'x'-shaped low temperature bands is achieved, illustrating the realization of these structures by higher azimuthal modal structures of the oscillatory convection.
