Medical micro- and nanomotors in the body

Huaan Li et al.

Summary: Attributed to their miniaturized body size and active mobility, micro-and nanomotors (MNMs) have displayed significant potential for medical applications. However, addressing critical issues such as cost-effective fabrication, integration of multiple functions, biocompatibility, biodegradability, controlled propulsion, and in vivo navigation requires substantial efforts. In this review, we summarize the advancements of biomedical MNMs over the past two decades, focusing on design, fabrication, propulsion, navigation, as well as their abilities for barrier penetration, biosensing, diagnosis, minimally invasive surgery, and targeted cargo delivery. Future perspectives and challenges are also discussed. This review lays the foundation for the future development of medical MNMs, taking a step forward towards practical theranostics using MNMs.

Antimicrobial Peptide Nanoparticle-Based Microneedle Patches for the Treatment of Bacteria-Infected Wounds

Biao Wang et al.

Summary: In order to prevent the development of drug resistance during antibiotic treatment of wound infections, the use of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) has been explored. However, challenges such as low bioavailability, rapid degradation of AMPs, and the difficulty of eliminating bacteria in deep tissue hinder its application. To address these issues, microneedle patches containing AMPs and recombinant type III humanized collagen (Col III) were designed for slow and controlled release to effectively eradicate bacteria in deep wound tissue and promote wound healing. This strategy demonstrates the potential of a microneedle-based antimicrobial drug delivery system.
